Doing research on a 401 build. What's a better option? Port and polish the factory dog leg heads or get bare aluminum heads and build those? Trying to get the most bang for the buck. It'll be a street/track car. What are my valve size options? I'm thinking about 7/16" rocker studs and 1.7:1 roller rockers.

Saves about 40+ lbs also.

For the money go aluminum.

I fail to remember for sure but I think
if you wans 7/16 studs you will need to go
with INDY heads.

You can replace the 3/8" studs the Edelbrocks have with 7/16". I did on my current build.

I think before you can decide your head choice you need to take a hard look at what your goals and expectations are. It's pointless to toss money on aluminum heads if you can achieve your goals with something you already have with a little work. You can make more power investing in a proper roller cam setup than spending money on aluminum heads that your not utilizing. It's just not a cut and dried answer without any additional information.

That's good advice. My current 401 pushes my '69 AMX in the high 11's on pump gas and it's got a production block, crank and heads. Chassis is also part of the equation.

Current goal with the new build is 10's on pump gas.

My 363 hornet is pushing 11:30 with bolt on eddy heads. Porting iron heads today will exceed a set of 60119 eddys. I have sold numerous sets of these and NOT one complaint. They all love them due to being able to repair them if a valve gets loose or a piston failure. For the money, I would buy 60119 and forget iron. jim
