Duh!!! Not enough coffee yet... yes, HIGH pressure there. It's actually pushed into the engine, easier than a scoop or ram air tube from the front.

Trader, I read the story about the Penske/Donohue development of the 70 Javelin a long time ago. It may have been in the book Donohue wrote, "The Unfair Advantage" or an excerpt from it. To further re-enforce the concept that Penske/Donohue developed a ducted air inlet system coming off the base of the windshield for the 70 Javelin Trans Am race car, sort of a cowl induction system, I have a JoHan 1/25th scale model of the 70 Javelin race car that has the duct system on it. In 71 along with the new body style, came a new hood that included a cowl induction system. The cowl induction system increased the engines output a few horsepower as well as reduced the drag induced by the cowl area by removing some of the high pressure air in front of the windshield and forcing air into the engines intake/carburation system. Another curiosity I recall reading that came from Donohue was that they wished the 70 AMX grille could be installed on their 70 Javelin racers because as a result of wind tunnel testing they discovered that the AMX grille produced less drag than the Javelin grille in 1970. Hence the 71 Javelin/AMX grille was flush with the front of the car like the 70 AMX grille. Donohue was a brilliant engineer as well as a very talented driver.

Like all who are after bit more grunt (hillclimbs & sprints) I'm looking at a cold air induction setup on my AMX as she gets a bit hot under the hood. I've shifted the battery to the boot which we enable a hole to be cut into the panel beside the radiator. Through this a 3 or 4" duct with a filter mounted behind the grill and initial thoughts to fit the engine end of the duct over the standard snorkel filter. simple to make, how effective will be suck it and see. If any one has tried something similar appreciate feedback.

I've seen similar setups, I guess the main potential restriction would be the size of the air cleaner snorkel and often people will modify the filter assembly to have two snorkels and run two pipes. Not sure if running a pod filter behind the grille would be any better than just using the normal filter in the factory assembly.
