Can somebody tell me why AMC went from a round snorkel on their air cleaners to a rectangle/square?

Specifically on the round ones was there ever the option to run a hose off the snorkel to the front of the vehicle like there is on the square ones I see...mostly on CJ's and Waggy's?

I came across this round air cleaner with this "adapter" on the end...

They changed to the square design when they incorporated a trap door to seal off the snorkel wen the engine was shut off. The square ones also flow better.

Anybody have an idea if this is an OE part or something added on at a later date:

The only info I have is that the air cleaner is from a 75'-76' 401:

It looks like an adapter to run 4" hose off the snorkel....?  I wouldn't mind finding a second if possible but google/ebay and other search options aren't turning up anything.

Yes. Lots of cars from the mid 70's had a fabric hose with a metal coil inside that lead from the air cleaner to the front radiator support to pipe cooler air into the air cleaner.  The fabric hose is an OE part that to my knowledge, has never been reproduced by the aftermarket for replacements.  After a few years they usually fell apart and with no replacements nobody bothered with them.  My Valiant used to have a similar setup.

I always wanted to get two of them and stick them on a dual snorkel for like a cold air induction system like the big Oldsmobiles of the 60's.

Pretty much what Im doing.....

Unit #1:

Unit #2:

Unit #1 prepped:

Unit #2 cut:

Mocked up:

I havent notched Unit #1 yet, but when I do the "flanged" area of #2 will sit inside the base of #1 for a failrly clean look.

The boots are from a 60's CJ5 and the first ring on them fits perfectly over the lip of the snorkels.  They are 2.5" dia.....

I have 2.5-3" rubber couplers and will run 3" hose up to the grill area where Ill have cut outs....

The plastic round adapter is factory on mid 70's Jeep line to allow the engine to pull air from the front of the vehicle..right behind the grille, through the front engine compartment bulkhead panel, "cold" air rather then the "hot" under hood air.

Nice setup. I am planning something similar for my Grand Wagoneer. It had the square snorkel stock. I wondered if there is any way to insulate the heat from the metal body of the cleaner assembly?
