If you don't have hood insulation or have good clearance from the insulation to the lid, use a smaller diameter element and lid similar to a 70 AMX/Javelin ram air lid.

Great minds think alike! I think the air filter element should be the same though. I know that the 68-70 v8 filters are the same, ram air or not.

Here's a mid 50's Cadillac Bat Wing air cleaner. One of my favorite stock air cleaners. It will support 400 hp and you will have the cool factor.

This has been an insightful thread, I appreciate all the ideas. Contacted the guy I got the donor air cleaner base from and he has another along with a lid. This will allow me to fab a dual snorkel air cleaner with the big carb neck that will look like a factory unit. And save the original air cleaner from being altered. I like a lot of these ideas, but I need some snorkel! Two should do it. Won't be original, but it'll look a lot like a 1967 air cleaner, except with two snorkels. Just need to decide 90 or 120 degree sweep

Is that the Bat Wing air cleaner ? I always thought that this was the regular air cleaner and the big, gold "V" shaped air filter used on the dual quad Eldo engines was the Bat Wing.
Just a note that the stock 67 4 bbl air cleaner in the picture is a one year only piece. There are two versions of it though. The standard one is the one you have and the California version has a PCV elbow on the side like the 68 and up filters. I wouldn't modify it at all. Find a later model more common filter. |

HA! I was going to post something similar... A 1967 Buick GS air cleaner. Back in the early 90's my parts guy had one and called it the Star Wars air cleaner. Much like the Cadi but more modern, almost like the clean look of the plastic engine covers used on most cars made from 2000 on up. It was pricey back then, and can only imagine $1500+ for a good usable one. I think all pre 70's Buicks used Rockchester carbs, so you would need to check if the diameter may not fit on your air horn.
