Ask any V8 American owner if they were happy that they put dual exhaust on their cars and I bet that the answers will be mostly all positive both in seat of the pants feel and quality of sound pleasure for the ear.
IMO there is no point in doing the Cam unless the exhaust is done first. One of the first things we did to my brother's 67 290 2 bbl auto Rogue convertable was to remove the remaining air-injection tubes from the exhaust manifolds, grind down the bumps inside the runners and add the dual exhaust. We did this within a couple weeks of buying the car. Kens plans were to add the 4 bbl intake and carb later. It has been ten years now and he still hasn't added the 4 bbl carb and intake. The car runs great and sounds great. If Ken ever gets around to swapping out the intake and carb I am sure he will think that he has a new car again. IMO do the exhaust now and start buying the other parts, Cam, Lifters, Intake, Carb and gasket set as the budget allows and install all of those parts at the same time. Re-curving the Distributor and installing the Pertronix ignition system can be done at any time. Also good bang for the buck.

When I get the 290 into my Honcho, it will get an SP2P intake and Edelbrock with dual exhaust and the AX-15/NP208 sitting in my carport. First I need to sell the 360/T18/NP208 already in it. (I'm surprised it's not already gone since I posted it for $500 last summer)

I have a small hole in the tail pipe as it goes over the axle so the exhaust will probably be the first thing I do. Right now it has a 2" system and I can't figure out a slite low RPM tapping sound that goes away after the RPM's increase. Have already tried to rebuild the damper thinking it was coming from there, and replaced the dounut seals, and new manifold gaskets. The sound is definitely coming from that area, and most people who listen to it think its not a sound consistent of a lifter. I haven't pulled off the manifold to inspect it, but from what can be seen there is no sign of a crack. All this can be addressed when I do that. Really great information coming in. I appreciate it.

Relatively good increases in performance, both power and economy can be achieved for very little money. A good low restriction muffler, like a Walker DynoMax Super Turbo, is first on the list. Every vehicle I have ever put one of those on ran better, and they are not obnoxiously loud. Dual is nice, I went almost a second quicker in a 304 2bbl Gremlin with duals, but I agree with Frank, for a 290 a single exhaust is enough if you are on a budget. Almost every car will benefit from a performance recurve on the distributor. More initial advance, less mechanical advance, in a little quicker. All it takes is a lighter spring or two and a bushing on the advance limiter pin and cranking the timing up to 15 degrees at idle with the vacuum advance disconnected.

You can get it by puting it on stands and rotating the wheels while counting drive shaft rotations. My AMX has a 2.87 ratio (original) that I am thinking of changing. A 3.54 in mine would make the car a totally different animal. That being said I enjoy driving my car and the 2.87 makes it a nice driving car...maybe a 3.15....hmmmmm

I went ahead and put on a jacket to check it out and it appears to be a 2.87.

My understanding is this is a unknown motor condition wise. That said, Don't waste your money. Do dual exhaust and headers, Electronic ignition and rebuild the distributor, clean the carb/rebuild and maybe up the main jets a size or two. If the motor blows what have you wasted? $50 bucks on the carb, which you may be able to sell for that on ebay. Then you can bolt in that rebuilt 390 you pick-up for $2k and slap your Distributor in it and add that intake and 4bbl (which would have been too much for that old 290) that everone wants you to put on now.
