Looking for some help, I bought my 79 amx with a 304 in 1984 when I was 17. It had a/c at the time. At 17 you don't need a/c and it takes power so everything but the lines went away. Fast forward 35 years and I'm a little older and am trying to right all the wrong I did to the car. I have the compressor bracket but am not crazy about the looks of the York compressors. I have seen Sanden compressors used. Can anyone tell me if there is any fab needed to use a Sanden and what that would be? I have found the rest of the parts but is there any place in particular that stands out that would be better getting the parts from? Any and all info is appreciated, Thanks.

Wagoneers from 89-91 had Sanden compressors on 360s. Try the wrecker or even try a Chrysler dealer.

I'm told those Jeep brackets can be a little hard to find. There are lots of York-to-Sanden adapters on E-Bay, but not sure how engine specific they are. Maybe someone who has used them can chime in. I'm considering the same swap for my Javelin.
Here's another AMC specific kit: For that price it should come with the compressor, but it's not clear to me from the ad that it does.

Here's the bracket that converted the White70 from a york/tecumseh to the sanden. It fit like a glove and needed no adjustment to get the belt alignment correct. I considered one of the fabricated brackets, this looks more professional to me. More reading and a whole series on AC in a 70 Javelin hope this helps

Great info, Armand. What did you do about the evaporator/expansion valve connectors under the dash? Seems like converting those to O-ring fittings would be problematic unless you already have the dash out. EDIT: Rereading I see you had the evaporator out of the car. I'm going to stick with the original flare fittings, at least for the under-dash stuff.

Camjam, The AC box comes out from under the dash without removing the dash.I did it. It isn't a cake walk, but far from impossible as well. I removed and installed the whole assembly by myself in my poorly equipped garage. Just took patience and thought.

Adapter plates are available from any classic car a/c vendor. I would use new barrier hose, a new drier, and a modern parallel flow condenser, with R134a. Done right, you will need a winter coat.

I have a 4.0L in my 63 Classic. I'm using a Chrysler LH body parallel flow condensor (made some aluminum brackets with bolts through the core), a universal drier, the 88 Jeep Sanden compressor (well, a generic replacement now), and all the original under dash stuff, including the expansion valve. I had barrier hoses made with flare fittings under the dash and o-rings for everything under the hood. Works great! Any hose place can make hoses for you. You can even re-use the original fittings once you CAREFULLY cut the crimp band off (Dremel works great, hacksaw can be used). They will put a new band on it. Of course that's assuming the seat area of the old fitting is still good and not pitted. The place I used was able to provide new flare fittings, but that was 15 years ago.
