6 Cylinder Engine Repair and Modifications : 2bbl carb for a flathead?

    Author: tyrodtom
Subject: 2bbl carb for a flathead?
Posted: May/15/2008 at 10:38pm

They listed a 110 hp flathead in 54 or 55, I've seen it listed a a 2v and a 2-1bbl, don't know which was correct. The 2-ibbl head I found was made by Fenton, but the air cleaner had a factory made appearance. I've seen several 2-1bbls flathead cars on E-Bay, the aircleaner setup on them look different than mine. My Fenton head was aluminum, at least one of the heads I saw on E-Bay looked like cast iron.

I'm fixated on the 2-1bbl because I think the fuel distribution is better on the 2-1bbl head than the single carb in the center, though it isn't somthing you can install and forget. Whenever you make a radical change from stock in one area you've usually got to make other changes to get the full benifit.

The old Nash I got the head off of also had a cam with fatter lobes, more duration, no marks that I could definitely id as aftermarket or stock. It was the car that I got the idea on how to make a easy dual exhaust manifold by just taking the cap off the front of the head pipe and running another outlet from there. Some guy back in the 50s had a hot rod Nash and I got all his goodies and put them on my 59 American.

A '55 Wyllis. I bought it as a parts truck, lots of rust. I was trying to buy my Grandpa's '55 Wyllis at the time. Grandma sold it to my uncle and now my dad has it. So maybe someday...Sold it to Darian Auto Parts in Darian, NY. Don't know if the still have it. She was pretty rough.
Pictures! : The Hornet Project -

    Author: Hornet
Subject: The Hornet Project -
Posted: May/15/2008 at 9:49pm

I had my Javelin media blasted and was very happy with the results. Since you mentioned you will probably rotisery your car, much of the media will fall out with a little help from an air hose and you could even plug the holes with packed fiberglass before blasting. You don't actually move the B pillers, you remove and discard the 4 door center post and replace it with a partial rear quarter panel with the door strike area included. Since you would only be removing 1 post per side the structure should not shift. I would only do one side at a time. I would start by drilling out the spot weld on the center post after removing both doors on one side. Bolt the longer replacement door in place and adjust it for the best fit at the rocker and roof line, the fender can still shift some. Carefully cut out the needed rear quarter filler panel with the door striker area included as well as the window sheet metal frame that you removed at the spot welds. Try to remove the new filler in one piece. You will have to remove the rear window to axcess the spot welds that hold the frame in place. Line up the new panel with the new door before tacking it in place. If you butt weld the new skin to the existing outer quarter panel, you can remove the old striker post if you want to from inside, but I don't think this would be needed. 2 door inner trim panels from the donar car should fit the new area. Good prep work at the spot weld and taking the time to line the peices up will pay off a lot in the final product. A hack job splicing will only cause you to loose interest. Since the donar car is for sure a gonar anyway, you can cut the panel with part of the roof attached and drill or grind the spot welds from the oposite side. The area where the parts butt together will need to be cleaned up real good for the best fit. You can probably use any year Hornet for a donar since the doors and the area of the quarters you need will be the same. Even a Concord would have the same doors and front portion of the quarters. The differences were in the fenders, grills and rear panels.

Thanks again,

That's really some valuable information which I certaily do appreciate. I really appreciate your detailed description on how to do this. I really like the additional idea of the Concord which I will now include in my search for a donor car.

After looking more closely at a picture of a '74 Hornet 2 door sedan it's all falling into place now about the importance of the sedan body style over the hatchback body style with the 2 door sedan trim above and behind the rear side window as you had mentioned and the use of the body panel section under the rear side window on the sedan.

I really can appreciate your emphasis on taking the time to do good clean prep work and good planning to avoid any unwanted surprizes.

I think if I'm unable to get an entire donor car back to my shop to remove the parts I need, I can haul my cutting torch into a U-Pull-It yard and cut back into the roof and excess areas, then bring the parts back to my shop where I can trim it clean with a die grinder and clean it all up for a good clean fit. I'm really going to try to to keep the replacement panels & all in one piece.

I found a place today called "Redi Strip of Phoenix" who can dip the entire car. They didn't answer their phones today. I'll take a drive over there in the next couple days to talk about price.

Thanks again for the extremely valuable information.
