The pre-cut kits I purchased for my AMX came with staples. I was thinking about using a pneumatic sheathing stapler. They use galvanized 16 gauge 1/2 inch crown staples. I plan to staple the rubber on (I am sure the staples will penetrate the rubber and metal, hold the stapler tightly to the surface and the staples will shoot right in), use side cutters to cut down the ends of the staples, then bend them over with pliers and (here we go again, Sidewinder) a hammer. I might use a high density polystyrene block to back it up, as the staples will shoot into it and the block will pull off.
The Paslode stapler I use will bury a 2-inch staple solidly into an oak block, so I think it will work.

I drill through them and use paper clips as the staples. You can cut one up into 3 or 4 staples and they are easy to fold over and you can get them in a nickel finish if you want.

You will not normally find any paint inside the troughs or on the rubber flap since they did not apply any under the fender anyways. That's why many AMC's rusted out at the top of the fenders since there was no way to protect the bare metal above the troughs since the assembled the sheet metal parts before paint. Lots of bare metal under hinges and other hidden areas. I use a pick for the holes instead of drilling, then either water pump pliers or a body hammer. I put the replacement rubber in place and using the original holes in the metal as a guide, I drilled small holes in the rubber with a drill.  Pushed the staples thru the original holes and flattened with a pair of pliers.

Restoring my 69 AMX and want to replace the inner fender splash shields but not sure how to staple them back to the body. Any ideas? Is there an industrial strength stapler I can get???
