Glad to see you made the decision. I would complete a spray-out (card) first and see how the paint looks to you without the pearl. A lot of the the pizass is the pearl and metallic. You can change the size of the metallic to a smaller flake, but again, removing the pearl or metallic can signficantly change the visual appearance of the color. It's worth completing a few spray out cards and place the card up onto the car for comparision.

As already discussed, just adding BC/CC on the car changes the originallity of the car, sooooo, must people are used to seeing pearls and metallics on modern made cars.

The last few days I've been looking at the Jeeps in town painted that color ( Mango Tango ) is Jeep's name for it. I've about decided to go with it but leave the pearl out of the job, I like the pearl but that's going a little too far.

I think it's what you could call an acceptable upgrade kind of like radial tires. at least that's what I'm telling myself today. besides it's a mopar anyway color right.

I had my BSO 69 AMX repainted in lacquer back in 1977. Unfortunately, the color came out looking darker than the original paint. I say unfortunately, because I love the original bittersweet paint color.
Naturally with a 35 year old "lacquer" repaint, it's showing its age. So when I can afford it, I planned on using Dodge's Toxic Orange color on my car as well.

I like what I like but I'm an originality snob on all my cars. it's tough to make a decision sometimes.

If the change is subtle, it probably won't affect the resale value appreciably, and unless you're painting it with acrylic enamel, the paint won't be factory correct anyways. Change the colour slightly as well and it will still be incorrect. You can only be correct or incorrect. So paint it the colour you like.

A buddy of mine has that exact car, R/T. It is a sharp looking color. You are right, the color is transparent and can appear to change a few shades of hue depending on how the light it's the car.

Ultimately, what do you want as a finished product. Bolt on items and paint can always be changed back to stock, if needed in the future.

Do you want a concours show car, than only a single stage original refinish will work. Even changing a car to bc/cc, is changing the paint, as discussed earlier. The clear alone changes the entire presentation of the paint, it appearance and color from a single stage, sooooooo, it's your car, what do you really like?

Exactly

Using a Base/clear coat system is a variance on the paint color. No matter what you do ( other than extreme experimentation of the mixing formula), the color will not 100% match the variance ( hue & sheen) of the original single stage paint.

With that said, it's only academic, that you can say it's the original color (based on the paint code name) but the color is truly not original.

Soooooooo, select the color that your want, that suits you.

One of the members of the Potomac Ramblers did the same thing. He had an original Goldenlime AMX and when the car was restored, the color was slightly changed to a modern Jeep color ( looks goooood). Although the car is clearly green, not goldenlime, most folks still refer to Harley's car as Goldenlime. The point being, you can change up with some variance in color and most folks will still equate the color as being the "original paint color designation".

I have the formula so I can duplicate the mix. a little more red/gold makes it much more orange and pop in the sunlight. it's so close to the 2011 jeep mango tango it's not funny. I bet not 1% of the people at an average car show would ever question the originality of an AMC color because they don't know.

I'm not restoring the car for resale but I always keep it in mind. I often wonder on a car like this if the looks of a better color would hurt the value or help it.

I like what I like but I'm an originality snob on all my cars. it's tough to make a decision sometimes.

We just finished painting a 70 AMX in PPG's best brand of base clear and the color has way more pop than the original ever did. You can take a look at the color difference of before and after here: 70 BSO AMX before and after
