   Years ago I took off the rocker shaft and gently blew compressed air down the passage that goes from the 2nd from the rear rocker shaft stand, down into the head, it wasn't totally pluged, just restricted. Have to wonder if it was sludged up, and disturbing things was the final straw......
I've cut a few myself to improve oil flow. That used to be fairly common, especially on cars driven in town when the oil would sludge up in that area.

   The left front head bolt goes into the water jacket, it's the stud-looking combination bolt that yours has in the middle, from the factory that bolt is at the left front. From the factory all the other head bolts are the same. I believe that the only bolt in water is by the water pump.

Also, that's not a stud. It's one of the head bolts from the outside of the cover near the exhaust manifold.

A-ha... Why might someone have put it in here? Will the #2 bolt enable oil flow to the rocker shaft if I do swap them around...?

Hi!

I had terrible valve train noise in my 1970 Hornet, tried Wynn's lifter cleaner & thicker oil (the engine is worn), to no avail. Today I removed the valve cover and fired it up - no oil flow!

I pulled the rocker shaft, took it apart to see that it's in bad shape! After sanding the shaft & rocker contact surfaces and oiling everything up I put it back. Much better!!! :)

But.

Still no oil flow in the valve train. Oil pressure is good.

I finally got it:



The previous owner has replaced the #3 passenger side head bolt (from the firewall) with a stud and a nut!!! This will block the oil flow to the valve train as described in http://www.mattsoldcars.com/RestoreAmerican/boltmod.shtml.

Now, what I'd like to do is swap the #2 and #3 head bolts to restore oil flow to the rocker shaft. Do these bolts pass through the block water jacket? Or is is OK for me to just take them off and swap them around? Any other considerations?
