195.6 Oil filter : The 65 model 195.6 OHV and L-head...

    Author: farna
Subject: 35066
Posted: Dec/20/2011 at 10:31am

The 65 model 195.6 OHV and L-head came with a full flow filter. The oil pump AND BLOCK, however, are different from the earlier models. You can't put a full flow oil pump on the old block. Well, it might be possible, but you'd need to make a block-off plate for the oil return passage in the bottom of the pump and remove the pressure by-pass valve from the full flow pump. The older car have the pressure by-pass in the block. If the filter stops up it would be possible for pressure between the pump and filter to get high enough to push out the rubber gasket or bulge the filter. There should be a corresponding drop in engine oil pressure due to the reduced flow, so if you have a gauge (and watch it occasionally!) that shouldn't be a problem. The filter isn't likely to suddenly stop up, it would be a gradual decrease in pressure (until pressure is high enough to blow the filter gasket out, then a SUDDEN decrease...).

Best bet is to use the partial flow filter from any earlier 195.6. The partial flow filter is obviously adequate. I ran a 195.6 for 14 years as a real daily driver (7-10K a year) and never had any problems, and there was no more than expected wear when the engine was rebuilt with over 100K on it. It wouldn't be hard to use a newer model remote filter kit. You just need the base and hoses. Tap into the main gallery like the factory partial flow system does. Just use brass adapters to mate with the remote filter kit hoses. That way you can use an easier to find filter. The old PB50 can be ordered by any parts store, but isn't used by any other automotive applications -- only a few real old ones like the 195.6 (the last to use it). The filters are still used in some trucker refrigeration units and other industrial applications. Parts places that cater to the local big truck shops may have them in stock, or reefer trailer repair places. Easy enough to order 2+ every few years though -- filters have a long shelf life.

If you can deal with the machine work Tom's mod works well. There is the slight problem of having too much pressure in the pump itself cause a problem (as described above), but that's very remote.
