They said it was "good enough" for a trailer queen but I drive this daily so he was concerned about longevity. It is pretty scored.

Here's a couple of things to consider. I'll bet you can buy a core 998 cheaper than a 727. You'll need another driveshaft and yolk for the 727 since it's 4" longer and the spline is larger. The 727 is ±35 lbs heavier which will use about 15 Hp more to turn the additional rotating weight. The 998 can have a few upgrades done that will handle that 360 with no issues. You rebuilder should be able to handle that easily. That info is all over the Mopar boards on how to upgrade. Unless you have high HP, the 998 is the way to go IMO. Oh and by the way - either way you go, have a bolt in sprag put in it.

For all the reasons you said I want to keep the 998. Trying to find a good core here in the northeast is turning out to be harder than I thought. A couple of people are looking at their "inventory" but nothing yet.

A core out of an eagle would work. I would think they would not be to hard to find.

Yeah you would think that's the deal except this is a 30+ year old car. Even though the TF998 was the most common transmission that shipped with it, the car itself is becoming an extremely rare drop in yards across the US and they mostly populate the only two Canadian yards known to me. I've had all kinds of weird problems with the 998 that should have totaled the car the first time it blew up because it was that bad. It's not only economically unsound to replace an overpriced transmission with another, it's a flat out retarded waste of time. If you swap in a 727, it's a good core with improved durability and it is NOT a price concern. Wish I had one. Due to excess length, all you need to do is shorten the driveshaft. If for some reason you want this to be a temporary thing until you find a 998 core, get a spare driveshaft and shorten that to the new spec instead.
I will never be East of the Mississippi as everything on that side of the country has a series of problems that aren't survivable to me but if you're actually planning on finding a 998 case it's going to come out of an AMC and it will be common and recent enough to do you any good. So it's definitely going to come out of either an Eagle or Hornet wagon somewhere in that PA/NY area. There's just one critical flaw with that. There are two things that put these old cars in the yards: A junk ignition system and the transmission. Since an 85 Eagle wagon has been sitting in the Pittsburgh U Pull since the middle of last month, you might want to think about going out there. Row52 has a good photo of it with the engine still in one piece so it might be fine. One more thing. I've done crazier drives out to mislabeled "auto" Eagles with the 2CCCN vin just to grab a T-5 so you are potentially fighting the possibility that someone may have manual swapped it like I did with my 2CCCK vin Eagle. Flip a coin and call first. |

Dollar for dollar go with the 727...the crossmember and rear mount are the same...it is 4 inches longer and does require a different slip yoke but uses the same u joint...as for the dip stick i used a big car tube in a small car by straightening the lower bend...998 are strong unit`s and much stronger when placed in the right hands....

They make a bolt I sprag. I cant think of a reason that the sprag area would make the case unusable.
As said previously the smaller trans needs a high quality convertor or it will break the pump drive. I've broke atleast 2 with a 6 cyl. and a couple more with v-8's |

I"ll take a picture of two 998s from Eagles sitting on my shelves to be rebuilt........ and show how very different the back end is. There's a transfer case that bolts directly to the back end. There is no tapered tail or place for a driveshaft. They used lock-up converters (80-84) and a 4wd specific case. I've rebuilt my share over the decades and I to this day find it interesting that people still assume the Eagle transmission is usable in anything but an Eagle. Sorry but it's not possible to use an Eagle transmission case in anything but an Eagle. |
