Mine are defiantly not nascar heads...but they have been modified since the early 70`s...i freshened them several years ago...the valve`s in mine are 2.055 sbc .100 longer than stock and if i remember 1.171 ex. from a boss 302...the port work is very nice...my friend used them briefly in 73 and they sat in bags until 05 when i bought them...he reassemble his car and went slower with Edlebrock heads...

This is exactly what Bob Stieg does and with out even testing them on the flow bench his car dipped into the 9's.... He keeps the velocity up and has a strong average for his flow numbers but a matched combination is key..Wink

Did some sonic testing and these castings are special.

I suspect AMC had a "Racing" casting that were cast with the 993 numbers on an otherwise different casting.

The runners are much thicker than the stock 993 casting I have here.

There are subtle differences externally also. You can see in the pictures above the intake runner and below the threaded hole is a cavity on the stock casting and the other head has a wall.

Looking in the water jackets it is clear that the runners are thicker. It may not show up well in the pictures but, looking at it, it is clearly seen.

I have been trying to decide what heads to use on the engine for my Javelin and it looks like these are it

I like the idea of a special factory head, and with the extra wall thickness I can open them up more

I will install bronze guides, hardened seats, competition valve job, pushrod tubes, bowl work and see what they do

I will probalby use 2.100 / 1.6 8MM stem Ferrea competiton plus valves because I have them

Was Reed a cylinder head porter?

Are they raised runner heads?
