4.0 auto 4x4 Is the voltage regulator internal or external? Both types of alternator are listed with online retailers.

A 99 4.0L XJ alternator should have an external regulator.

The regulator is controlled by the main computer. When the drivers burn out, the whole computer is to be replaced (unless you convert to an external regulator.

I didn't want to believe it, but you're right. Not a huge fix as it turns out. There's a place out of Florida that sells refurbs for $159 and updates them with the specific V.I.N. info. I can replace it myself easily. Wink

External regulator from a '77 Dodge is what I (and many Jeepers) have been wiring in.

There are conversion kits and videos on that. The issue for me was that they said there would be a check engine light after the wiring change, and since my Jeep has emission testing, I can't have that. The reman ECU wasn't that much more than the conversion kit, and it's a plug n play.

And then its fixed correctly.   wiring in an external regulator and still have a check engine light is not repaired.

Check engine light went out on them unless the gold box isn't added.
