I believe the stat housing sensor is for the PCM use - not fan or sending unit, etc.

I have to agree with Dennis on the temp sender and air bit, too - the man is smart, yes, but the explanation is very logical and i've seen it happen. I HAVE had a case where I loosened the sending unit and let coolant flow out a bit then tightened it again I did that on my 87 as the gauge read goofy after I did some work on it one time.

And yes, some stats do indeed come with the hole and a check ball. Not all, like the man said, but they do sometimes have that.
That reminds me - I need to put a hotter stat in mine. It runs sub-green unless it's 90 degrees out and I have the AC on. I have to block half the radiator in the winter to get heat out of it.
Maybe you and I should swap some parts, Scott! HA, mine would run hotter and yours would run cooler.  ;-)

I checked out some online Jeep forums and found topics on similar issues but I still don't know for sure where the problem lies. One thread stated that 3-4 hot/cold cycles are needed to purge air from the cooling system after it's serviced, so today I again topped off the overflow bottle, then set out in 85 degree temps for a test drive. The engine warmed up normally, then hovered at 220 before shooting up almost to 260 again. I kept moving and it soon started to come back down to 220. In the driveway it shot back up to 260. Even showing this temp on the gauge the radiator cap was very cool to the touch. This Jeep is making me crazy. Wacko

Bill is right the sensor on thetthermostat  housing  is for the pcm. The pcm controlls the fan. The air sometimes wont purge on its on with the cap on tight. And then sometimes you still have to loosen the heater hose or thet temp sensor to get the air out....unless you put the hole in the thermostat  flang on the top

That's what Jeeps do!! LOL

The new T/stat you installed could be bad! I have only had that happen once, but it can happen.
