I've been running a DUI on my J10 for about 6 years now.
If it came with a gear already on it, I would have used it as it came. Problem is I don't remember if it did or not. I got it in my pre-PC days, I didn't know about all the problems other people were having with AMC eating distributor gears.
It ate a cam lobe a couple of years ago, I noticed no unusual gear wear when I took it out. I put the old gear on the new cam, and so far, no problems.
I don't use the J10 a lot, but when I do, I use it hard, towing once a week, all summer, and getting firewood out of the woods in the fall.
Installing that DUI was the single greatest improment i've made in my J10, for what they cost, $350, they should be.

Great info. So if I do end up going with the DUI system I should replace the gear that comes with the DUI with the old Dizzy gear. I'm glad I kept reading.

Definately with any HEI or aftermarket AMC distributor. None of them come with a gear that matches the OEM cam gear.

If anyone feels the need to risk an unknown gear, here's one to think about. http://theamcforum.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=6227&KW=&PID=51254#51254 |

I've had a procomp (made in australia) in my 350 chevy for a couple years now with zero probs. $70 compared to the $140 mallory that went out after very few miles. I figured mallory would be good, since they've been around at least since the 60's. so far the cheapy has outlasted it by a long shot

I'm installing a different motor(360) in my car, it didn't come with a distributor. I planned on using the one out of my 304. Am I asking for trouble? Both are stock.

I used the stock distributor out of my 290 in my new 360. And it hasn't caused any problems. Honestly, I'd feel comfortable saying that there's basically no way it could. Assuming the gear on the end of the camshaft is the same, and I can't imagine it isn't (this is AMC, after all), you should be good to go.
