August 2017 Update  -  Engine

I finally got the engine pulled last night.  Whew!  Had to pull the trans and bell housing first, was trying to avoid that but oh well.  I'll pull the head tonight and post pics of the insides.

August 2017 Update  -  Engine

Pulled the head off the engine to see what might have happened that day on the way to work.  Mystery solved, looks like cylinder number 5 gave up.

I'd just like to say, that motor had a long life and ran a lot of hard miles.  I am sorry to see it go, but it will live on after the rebuild, right back in the GT where it started life some 34 years ago.
However....it will be better than it was before....bigger....stronger....faster.....no, not $6,000,000 worth, but better still.....

That 258 block is just getting warmed up.
Put the biggest cam you can in and keep the valve train stock.

I have completely done a 199 and 232. I got a 258 standing by.

Very odd. Wonder what caused that. Is that also missing pieces on #2 piston? Hard to tell from the picture.

The same thing that caused this in my friend`s engine...Detention...except my friend drove it for 2 years adding 2 quarts of oil a day(Oil was free)If you look at the picture you can see the top of the piston broke and the ring cut a groove in the land from no support then fell out...There was no 1st or 2nd ring on that piston...30 over and a complete rebuild good to go(It`s a 70 Chevy LT1 350)

December 2017 Update  -  Engine Rebuild

I'm still waiting for the engine rebuild, they called and said it was ready Saturday afternoon, but too late in the day for me to arrange for transport.  Hoping to be able to take a day off work this week and bring it home, but if not, then I'll have it home by next Saturday.
I'll take the call that it was ready to be picked up as a Christmas present after waiting soooo long for it.  I'm hoping that they spent the extra time making it a bullet-proof torque monster that revs to "11"....Tongue

Maybe I'll have some progress to post this week....as for now, this is where I am....

Sure looking forward to you getting back on the road and into the race. We need all the AMC support we can muster in Texas.

We'll be meeting up in Lufkin for sure.

TL,
I hate to admit it, but you will probably have the GT up and running 100% before we
ever get Linda's Javelin out of East Texas.
The new house arranging is going "VERY SLOW', and the reserved space, for the Javelin in the
tandom garage, still has boxes stacked to the ceiling.
As I have stated several times, Linda has all her paperwork for the Javelin, and looking at our garage,
I think she has also kept "EVERYTHING ELSEUnhappy" since 1972....
Original Owner, 1974 Javelin:

G4 Plum exterior with 421Q Black Uganda Interior. Purchased on July 16, 1974 from Hooker AMC, Sherman, TX for $4500.20
