Finally got the carb and serp belt worked out, let run 25-30 min last night,
temp gauge works, got up in the middle of normal, then tstat opened and it dropped a little
to bottom third of normal. But not much heat coming out of the heater, just a little warmer than
room temp. I've read about using CLR to flush radiator and core, anybody done this?
Or should I just flush the core?
Lots of info on the net about using it, lots say it works.
Some say no it will attack the brass and copper and weaken the metal.
Core isn't leaking, just seems stopped up.
Ps when I slide the heat control from cool to hot, what opens up to let the
hot water flow, can't find a heat control valve under the hood?
Thanks

Sounds as if you have a stopped up heater core or a heater valve that is not opening all the way.

You did not say what kinda of vehicle, but the valve will be in the heater hose. They are most commonly on the engine side fire wall. If not there it will be under the dash next to the heater box, or possible inside the box.

Locate your valve, determine if it is opening and closing properly, if it is working properly, flush your cooling system. If that does not cure your problem, then the heater core will have to come out and taken to a radiator shop for cleaning. I would expect the radiator to be somewhat stopped up if you determine the heater core is stopped up.

Have fun with your AMC's

Pick up some Prestone (or equivalent) radiator flush and follow directions. I have used it on many of my older cars to regain top cooling performance. The only car it didn't work in was my Hornet AMX. It had huge chunks of rust in it so that radiator was replaced.

The heater core is not easy to get to so removal would be the last resort.

Good luck.

My GF had a GMC Jimmy a few years ago (I hated it) that would blow cold air every time the coolant was low. Could this be the case?

The core isn't that bad of a job. Takes less than an hour. But you might have other issues. If it has the vacuum switch is it getting a vac. signal? Does the control panel work properly? How is the vacuum manifold where the hoses connect? Mine disintegrated on re-assembly. Is the blend air door functioning correctly?
    Many veriables here.

Have you checked to see if both hoses to the core are the same temperature (HOT)when at operating temperature.
If not check The fluid control valve in the hose before the core, If it has one.
Some times blocking off or attaching the core hoses together ( so you can drive) and back flushing the core at the car wash or with a power washer can do the trick. ( stand back)
I had a eagle sx4 the inside of the heater core was covered with the dash insulation cutout.

Both hoses getting hot, suction side slightley cooler then pressure side.
Still can't find any control valve, dash slide feeles like cable not vac operated.
The selector feels like vac and they are working,I can change from heat to vent to def. ok.
The cool to warm slide is stif like cable would be but it does go all way to hot.
When idling stil just warm air but when Reving it up some it gets plenty hot.
Put a 195 tstat in tonight before quitting, helped some but not while idling .
It's like it ant flowing enough at idle.

The heater door for how much heat is controlled, is on the top of the housing. You have to get down and look up to find it. It may not be properly adjusted, or retainer clip may have come loose.

I'll try to crawl under dash and c if door is working, and look for heat control valve.
Ps mabe when they changed the 79 engine out and put the 82 engine in
they left the heater control off?
