I am looking through the process to install the rally gauges into my 74 Jav that did not have the pack.  The TSM shows the location of the tach connectors but does not indicate which one is the power feed and which is the ground.  Who has done this?  I can not find anything using the search function but I am sure it must be here somewhere.  Input appreciated.

Thanks
Wayne

Brown feeds clock, and red feeds tach power. The tach feed from the distributor is yellow or orange... I am color blind and years of age on the wiring may affect what I see.

You will also need to either modify your existing harness or get an engine to firewall harness from a 73 or 74 jav.

There is a red wire coming out of the tach housing with a terminal on it. That goes to the clock terminal on the fuse panel.

There is a post on the tach housing. A brown wire should run from the post to the Acc location on the fuse panel.

There is a spade terminal on the tach housing. A wire runs from that terminal to the - side of the coil.

I have also had to run a separate ground wire from the housing to a good ground to get the tach to function.

I personally would not hook up the ammeter. It requires you to run full alternator output thru a 40+ year old gauge that was supplied by the lowest bidder. That is an invitation to a wiring meltdown or worse. I seen a few of the clusters with severely melted bodies at the ammeter hookup from excessive heat.

I have the clock figured out but not sure which of the two tach studs gets power or ground.  I have not pulled the old cluster out yet to see what factory wiring may be behind the dash.

The TSM does not differentiate.

In your top picture: The tall post, or stud, on the left has a brown wire that runs to ACC on the fuse panel. The short post, or stud, in the middle should have a male spade terminal under the nut. It gets a wire that runs to the - side of the coil.

I checked my two spare clusters, both have the spade under the nut on the short stud. I've had 3 other clusters in the past couple of years & they all had a spade there too. Not sure what happened to yours.

Thanks!  Is there a ground to run or is it through the cluster harness itself?

Looking at the picture on the TSM page the upper left corner of the flexible circuit board should have a brass ring where the screw goes through the circuit board and that corner of the tach. That brings the ground from the circuit board in to contact with the tach case.

Now with that said most circuit boards are in pretty sad shape in that corner area so adding your own ground wire is always cheap insurance.

Thanks, I think I have it all figured out.  One (hopefully) last silly question.  How does the gauge cluster come out?  I have taken all the screws out and can not remove the bezel.  Does it come out with the gauges?  All my other cars had a removable bezel and then remove the cluster.  Lots of things different between this and my 60's Ambassadors.

The white PVC cluster is held in place by a black ABS front bezel. The bezel has about 5 screws right under the overhang on the crash pad. Then there are about 3 or so screws along the instrument lights. You may havevto remove the switch pull tops for clearance. Once you get it loose you will need to go from under the dash near the steering column, to grasp and compress the plastic tab at the speedometer head at the gauge, and pull off. Be very careful, as it does not take effort to remove the head from the gauge when the tab is released. The heads tend to crack and pull away from the cable if not careful. Once you have that done, you should be able to pull out and tilt away from the dash panel and lift away.

After much consternation I was able to get the dash cluster out last night.  My hands were just too big to fit up under the dash with the AC duct work tight against the back of the speedo.  I even took off the dash cover and could not get the speedo cable to release.  Then the light bulb went off.  I went under the car and loosened the clamp holding the cable in place and pushed the cable through the firewall.  The cluster was pushed forward, the cable came off and out came the gauges.  Sure wish I had thought of that before taking everything else apart Cry  Spent the rest of the night changing over the odometer and electrical overlay.  I even put power to the clock and it worked.  Saturday I hope to get the interior all put back together although I have my doubts about how to hook up the CC at the tranny.  The cable just does not seem to match the adapter type they gave.  We shall see.  Then comes the rear springs and addco sway bar and then just drive it!!!
