I have a 74 AMX with the Rally Pac instrument gauges. All the gauges read low, The oil pressure, water Temp and the fuel gauge. I've come to the conclusion that the CVR is bad and needs to be addressed. I understand that I can have it rebuilt by RT-engineering and they will upgrade it to solid state. My question is, once the dash pad is off (no AC) it looks like I can get to the CVR pretty easily. It looks like two screws holding a Ubracket over the CVR. Once that bracket is off, is there any other connections to worry about, or does it just pull out of the back of the dash?..Thanks.

You got it. Just two screws. That "bracket" is part of the CVR. The CVR is one of the very few things you can reach without pulling the whole darn cluster.

I’ve taken an AC Dashpad off Numerous times. It is not hard at all.

Oh noooooooooo! Don't remove it just yet... there is a hidden nut that mounts behind or i should say in the map light. You must remove the opaque lens to find it. It is on the left side and is horizontal.

Ah yes. The good old hidden stud trick. Can't tell you how many times I have seen that area of the dash broken out. Good advice. Be on the look out for that hidden fastener behind the map light.

Will do. I've read on other threads that the light has to be removed to get at it, and as I understand that is the only real trick..

You don't need to send the CVR to anyone unless you just have to have a plug-in replacement that looks stock. You just need to wire in a generic 5V regulator. This is in a 63 Classic, but the approach is the same. You might need to remove the cluster for access though.  Of course there is no reason you can't cut or pry the case cover off the original and wire the regulator onto it instead.

This works on all but 70-77 small cars (maybe 69 American as well... I forget!). They use a CVR built into the temp gauge. You can do this, but have to cut apart the temp gauge to do it. 78+ cars (except the Matador and Pacer) use a different type of gauge system that works on +12V.

Frank, your solution looks great and may be better, but this is my first foray behind the Dashboard, and I'd like to keep it as simple as possible. I'm a bit apprehensive of taking the instrument cluster out of the panel.

While you have the top of the dash off it would be a good time to check and clean the dash cluster light bulbs. They are along the top of the cluster and are as easy to reach as the CVR.
