Thanks for the Kudos!

Just a quick update.  Not much has been done on the car this last month, but I did find a new emblem for the rear.  It's a R/H fender emblem from a '53 Hudson Hornet.  I'm going to have it re-chromed and then repaint the lettering red like original.  Then it's going on the R/H side of the back panel where the OEM emblem went.  Looks awfully neat, and it's WAY better looking than the stock block lettered emblem.

Also, I'm setting up shop to do cylinder head work here at the home shop.  Just made a deal for a big Kwik Way seat and guide machine that we'll be picking up this weekend.  I have a valve grinder, seat stones, pilots and drive, a small lathe and mill, a pretty decent set of porting tools, and I'll be building a flow bench later this year.  I'm going to sublet the surfacing initially, but will have a bead blaster in the next couple months.  Hope to be up and running by the end of March.

Need to get making money here soon so that I can get back on the Hornet project and see if I can't get it down to the Reno meet in June.  Going to be tight I'm thinking.

Got a neighbor for the Hornet temporarily.  Just brought this home last night and unloaded it this morning.  Weighs dang near as much as the Hornet with the six!

This is going to be one of the key components for me doing cylinder head work here at home.  It's a Kwik-Way 036 seat and guide machine.  I'll be modernizing the tooling with a T & S machine spindle setup and some tuning and tweaking this is a 2500 lb. machine that should be able to turn out really nice work once I tune and tweak it.  I'll be installing this over the course of the next couple months.  I need to get 220 run to where it's going to go and get the floor epoxy coated in the room where it's going.  Long road trip to Portland and back yesterday.  Left at 4 AM and got home a bit after 9 PM.

Also a couple pics of it on the truck.

And one of it next to the Hornet.  I'll take more pics once it's in place in the shop!

Quick update.  The home shop machine shop is ready to go.  I have everything on hand to rebuild heads minus a surfacer, but I'll be doing the surface work at the shop I'm going back to work for.  I'll be building custom engines again as well as doing installs.   I'll also be working directly with customers to figure combinations to get them to their performance goals.   Mostly going to do side work for some club customers and people from my old Matco route that want work done.

The Kwik-Way is dialed in.  Chuck runout is very low, the motor drive systems is all trued up and runs smoothly.  Turns out good seats on a couple of test heads I have here.  I have a new T&S seat cutting setup that runs like a VGS-20 Sunnen using Serdi, Newen or Rottler multi-angle cutters.   I even installed my own DRO design using a digital 8" caliper.  My valve grinder is a good running Sioux that I installed a Lacey Williams colleted chuck upgrade into.  Turning out valves with 2 to 3 ten thousandths of an inch runout which is way better than brand new spec of .001.  I'm planning on a flow bench at the home shop, but for now I'll use the SF600 at work for my R&D after hours.  Need to get the car up and running versus building a bench this winter.  Have to prioritize!

Should be working on the Hornet this fall/winter and into the spring.  I really want to have the car up and running for the club races at the drag strip next year.  Going to try to get the rear axle assembly put together and put in a Calvert system.   I'll be taking the motor back down to the shop in a month or two to get back to work on it.  Need an oil pan, pickup, and timing cover.  Once I have the oiling system figured out, I'll get ready to assemble the bottom end.  Need to balance the rotating assembly, which pretty much means the crank at this point.  I already balanced the pistons and rods before I stored everything.  Going to internal balance it since I want a "zero" damper and flexplate.

Should have the motor together by Jan/Feb I'm thinking.  Rear end should be in the car this winter.   Once the motor is done I just need an SFI flexplate to mate the motor and the finished transmission.   I have a V8 crossmember that's ready to swap in.

Will start taking further pics of the project as things get worked on or finished.

More parts for the 401 have been collected, and I'll be balancing the rotating assembly shortly.  Going to run a much different ring pack versus the parts that come from Wiseco with the pistons.  I'm using stainless gas nitrided rings with a PVD ceramic coating, napier 2nd, low tension.  Should be a better match for the cylinder wall prep and horizontal gas porting.  Also, I'll be using a complete beehive setup in the heads, and will bush the lifter bores.   Going to build a third oil galley and oil the mains that way.  I'll probably run .060-.075 holes in the lifter bushings.

So, the project is back under way again.  Also going to be pulling the 1.6 out of my Suzuki Sidekick and rebuild that when I get a spare moment.

Worked on the balancing a bit today.   Evened up the pistons and rods.   Already had everything weighed, but needed to final weight match the rods and pistons to do the final bob calculation.   Ran it up on the balancer and figured out that I'm going to need to add a bit of heavy metal to make the internal balance work.   Not a lot, but some.  Balancing for a 7500 RPM max.  1880 grams total bob which is decent for the 401.  I'll work on it at lunch during the week to get the tungsten into the flanks.   I've put together 4 engines since Jan 1 and I'm working on 2 more right now.  One's a Chevy stroker with AFR heads, and the other is a late model 9.5:1 circle track motor that we're updating for a friend of the shop owner.   Going to have another circle track motor to tear down later this next week for inspection and freshening.   May end up switching it from a high compression 380 incher with the 390 cfm carb rule to a 9.5:1 engine that our shop owner can run at more tracks this year.  Right now his engine is only legal for the touring series he's been running.  Whee!

Hope to have my block at the shop tomorrow and get the lifter bushings heading my way this week.   Rottler is installing our complete CNC machine upgrade the last week of the month, and I'm going to get them to demo the lifter bushing program on my block while they're here.  Need to get the third galley built and be ready to assemble shortly after we get the bushings done.

Picking up a Reactor auto flywheel from a forum member to use with the 4 speed auto.   Should be a good fit for street/strip.

Been super busy at the shop the last couple months.  Got our Rottler updated so that we can make it do new tricks.   Made a set of valve covers for an engine we displayed at the Roadster Show this weekend.  Here's some pics.

The home shop has been pretty much done since last fall, just haven't posted pics of it.   I've been awfully busy at work, so I'm not doing much side work.   16 hour days the last couple days but things are starting to come back together at the shop.  Major upgrade on our Rottler, replacing our cylinder hone, construction in the building and the 4 day car show this week.   Ugh.

Going to finally finish balancing the 401 crank this week and get back to work on my own stuff I hope.   Crossing my fingers.

Backed the car out of the shop this evening, and pulled the hood off.   I wrapped it all up nicely to keep it from getting scratched and set it aside.   Pulled the condenser, water bottle and A/C hoses out of the front.   Had less than an hour to work before we started losing light, so that was it.   Hoping to pull the engine soon.   With the weather getting nicer I'm going to try to get out for an hour or so a few nights a week to get the accessories all disconnected, then I'll pull the motor and trans out on a weekend.   Should get a bit more done tomorrow night and then a bunch one of the weekend days.   Need to run the block down to the shop this weekend also.   Going to be getting more done the next few weeks with the weather finally warming up.

Pics will be forthcoming as this goes on.   REALLY wanting a running car this year.   May not put the A/C back in the car initially.   I can do that later.   Going to pull the dash and rebuild the HVAC box, so I'll get a heater core and A/C evaporator and install them, then cap the evaporator.

This thing is going to go down a road this year I hope!

Stayed after work and worked on the crank today.   We had welded a pair of steel slugs into the factory drilled holes to fill the holes and reduce the tungsten required.   Spun it up on the balancer after work and figured out the required heavy metal.   It will only need a couple slugs of 3/4" on one end, a bit less on the other.   Almost could have done it with one 1" slug, but I need just a few more grams.   I can probaby use a single 1" on the rear, then I'll have the correction back on the flanks so that I can remove a small amount on the other side of the counterweight.   Fun stuff!   Will be heading in to the shop tomorrow to work on it and take the block in.

AMC club meeting this morning, then worked at the shop for about 4 hours.   Had a couple things to do and also worked on my 401 crank.   Hauled the block from home, so nearly everything is there for the motor.   Still waiting on BHJ for my lifter bushings.   They should have been here by now.

Ended up with a two 3/4" slugs on the front counterweight, then a 3/4" on the rear on one side, and two 1/2" shorter slugs a couple inches away where the balancer wanted 60 grams.   Not a lot of heavy metal, just needed 160 grams on one end, 140 on the other divided between 2 locations.   Used the press to install them after drilling and reaming.   They're in with a considerable amount of press fit.

Cleaned it all off and spun it up with the slugs in it.   Ended up being very close to finished on the rear, and a few grams off on the front near to where the factory balance hole was at.   I'm happy to have moved the correction back onto the counterweight.   Only had to make a small hole to finish it off.   Balanced to less than 1/4 oz/in. for an 1880 bob weight.  Polished the journals, then washed and cleaned the crank and oil passages.   It's all oiled up, bagged and ready to install.

The block needs the lifter bushings done, and then I'll bump a hone through the bores since it sat in sealed engine bags for a year and a half.   Still need to build a valley line for it, but the holes are drilled and tapped.

Came back to our town and helped a forum member install his 401/727 combo into his drag Gremlin.  The dogs got a walk and a car ride while he and I were working on the car.   Needs a few more things hooked up before we fire it this week.

Went through some boxes at the home shop and found all my AMC 20 parts.   Pulled everything together into one spot so that I can take it to work and press the Moser axles into the bearings and put the thing together.   I'll set preload and backlash there.   I installed the Richmond ratcheting locker into the ring gear housing after removing the spider gears.  I picked up one of the "quiet" lockers 18 months ago and finally got it together this evening.   I was waiting on a decision as to whether or not I was going to install disc brakes or put new large drums on it, because the backing plates are different, and the axles have to have the backing plates on when you press the bearings on.   Decided that the new Bendix drum stuff I already had purchased is the way it's going to go, so I'll put that together this week.

Basically, got a lot of AMC stuff done today!
