Been working on the Hornet since cruise season ended this past fall. I was told today that it might be nice to share the progress so far. Well, here goes. Started out with a pretty solid car but it had issues. A 10 foot car for sure with about 37 years and 47k miles worth of door dings, gravel blasting, and any other abuse you can think of.

Here is what she looked like at the start of the project. Not bad when you stand back 10 feet.

The fenders were a little sad. The passenger side had some rust issues where water got in under the radio antenna and ran down the underside of the fender to the splash guard behind the headlight bucket. As a result there was minor perforation along the top edge of the fender. It was off to the media blaster. After that it was epoxy primer and duraglass to clean that all up

Along with the fenders there was damage to the rear quarter panels just behind the rear wheels. This was old news as there was some bondo stuffed in there. Out came the bondo and due to the lack of Hornet repair panels another round of duraglass repair was in order for now. Later on down the road these repairs will be revisited.

Next it was time to address all the door dings, bicycle dents, stroller knocks, ladder bumps, gravel blasting, and what ever imperfections accumulate over 37 years.

Then it was time for paint. The decision was to go with two stage water borne paint. It took the crew at PPG almost 8 hours of mixing and test spraying to come up with a match to the original factory Mellow Yellow.

And of course as the light changes the color looks so very different when you photograph it.

That's it for now. I will post more progress later.

What's wrong with the intrepid? I remember back in the day when they were new we used to rent them all the time, heck even requested them, they were solid vehicles, and pretty powerful as well. The higher end models they sometimes had with the power seats were amazing on road trips. I suppose like most Chrysler products though, they do not age very well past a certain point.

I have time to get a few more pictures posted this morning.

Once the body color was squared away it was time for a few embellishments. The window frames were painted trim black to dress up the car a little. Again, notice how the color photographs so differently dependent on the light source.

Then it was time to address the engine bay. Lots of issues there. At one point the battery must have been boiled. The inner fender was acid etched and the battery tray was kind of sad. In addition to that the number 5 cylinder was not firing at all. Now we are getting into project creep. That is when the project starts to go beyond the original plans and budget. The engine bay was to just get a quick fluff job and the misfiring cylinder addressed but it all too soon grew in to a project of it's own.

More to follow later....

So out comes the 232/904 combo.  It looks a little worse for the wear as it supposedly only has 47k on the clock. The question lingers as to what is going on with the number five cylinder. In the mean time the transmission is trying it's best to mark it's territory all over the garage floor. I don't think there is a single seam, gasket, or joint that is not leaking fluid.

With the engine bay cleared out the extent of the damage from the battery acid can be assessed. As you can see this is going to be more than just a quick fluff job. Some serious clean up and to some extent paint work is going to be required. It looks bad but good luck holds out as it is only paint damage and surface rust. No perforation or deep rust to deal with. Lots of cleaning, sanding, and prep work here.

Once the clean up work was complete then the rust needed attending to. Eastwood's rust encapsulater to the rescue. The battery tray area came out looking like new.

The other areas showing surface rust got the clean and spray treatment as well.

Next came some sanding primer to level things out and to provide a uniform color base.

Now it looks like the engine bay is ready for some color.

Oh I know that "snow ball" all so well! Mine started with a rusted out lower radiator support & batt. area. When repaired and hit with a spray bomb it looked better than the rest of the engine bay so out everything came to do it right!
Doing a great job, keep going and keep us posted.

The color is a close as we could get to the AMC code E9 Mellow Yellow for 73. Anyone with access to the PPG paint codes should be able to mix it up for you. I would love to see a sportabout in the same color.
