First AMC was a '73 Javelin in school back in '81, Still have it but it's all rust. Last week I picked up a Z code '73 AMX From a young man in northern GA. His father has been restoring AMCs for years and 90 of the metal work is done and done right. I can wrench on a car all day but body work has not been a strong point, (I have painted a motorcycle that cam out fairly nice). As I go thru this I will take a lot of pictures and have many questions, some to get knowledge, some to get other opinions, some to just verify what I believe is correct really is. The car runs and drives rumor was that the car was originally bought from AMC to race. The cam does not sound stock and the carburetor is a Holley 8156, (750 DP made for racing). Car is in epoxy primer, even the floors and the trunk.
My thoughts about the repairs are. 1. Prime, block and prepare outside for paint. 2. Have someone that is a pro paint it. 3. Finish the interior. Carpet, seats, heat shield, etc. May or may not change color, I have different color parts and some original parts are bad. 4. Fix brakes and any other things to get it back on the road. 5. Pull my old engine and make sure it's OK, (less than 5000 miles on that rebuild). 6. Pull engine from new car, fix, clean and paint engine bay. 7. Put my engine and race transmission in to new car. That is just a rough overview. Any constructive comments are always welcome. Thanks, Ken Edited by ffltstn - Oct/29/2017 at 8:35pm |

Good luck with it. I suggest you get something (part of the interior or the wheels or the engine bay) done like you want it so you can begin to see the finished product. That should help keep you juices flowing.

Awesome! Looks like a great project car! I wish I could have found an AMX that was affordable.
One tip about painting. Most paint shops won't paint a car that they haven't prepped themselves, because they don't want to get blamed when the paint starts flaking or blistering down the road because of improper prep or incompatible materials. You might find a guy who works out of his house who will. If you prep it yourself, make sure you keep track of the brand and type of stuff you use so your painter can choose compatible paint. Upholstery is available from Legendary Interiors, but they don't make seat foam for the 73/74, only the 68/69 and 70-72. Don't throw anything away that you take off the car! I made that mistake on a few things and then found replacements weren't readily available and I that I could have restored the old part. You car will be worth more if you keep it as original as possible. If you modify it, keep the original parts so you can put them back on the car later if you need to. |
