Can someone tell me which way the fluid is pumped out of the transmission to the cooler? In other words, which bard is the out and which barb is in?
Thanks, Ollie |

According to an illustration I found, the one by the kickdown linkage is out to the cooler, the one at the rear is the return line.

Yes, the one at the front of trans goes out to the cooler and returns at the rear. The fluid in the convertor gets heated up by the torque multiplication going on during launch and is usually the hottest part of trans. That's why the fluid goes straight to the cooler. Some coolers specify which way they flow. Generally they flow top to the bottom.

If the cooler is the standard one in the bottom of the radiator, it wouldn't matter.

Thanks for the answers....
The reason I ask is I am repowering my Rambler from an air cooled Borg Warner to a 727. I don't have a cooler in my present radiator and bought a aftermarket trans cooler. I want the hot liquid coming into the top of the cooler. Have a fun AMC day, Ollie |

Ollie,
It kind of really doesn't apply to your situation but I thought I would share what I did as it might provide some ideas for future projects. When I converted my Hornet from the I6 to the V8 I took the radiator to a local shop and had them re-use the top tank on a new three row core. The bottom tank was too narrow to re-use so I had them install a generic tank with a built in 12 inch trans cooler. At first glance it looks stock and I did not have to find a place to mount an external trans cooler. The 12 inch trans cooler keeps the THM400 very happy. Ken |

Oh, now I get it. I was with the other people saying "why?" On a standard radiator with the cooler on the bottom, lying horizontally, it really wouldn't matter as the fluid would still flow in one side and out the other. But, this aftermarket one would need to enter through the top. I was also wondering if there was an extra cooler in addition to the radiator and you wanted it on the outbound side of the radiator. |
