I'm dropping in a rebuilt 727 with a mild shift kit and TCI breakaway converter. I don't deal with automatic transmissions too much so have some questions.
What's the correct fluid type? Getting different results when searching on whether dexron or f-type. Dry fluid capacity? Fill the torque converter before installing? Thanks |

With new rebuild kits, they all pretty much use better and newer materials that hold up well with newer fluids. You can go with Amisoil, Lucas, Royal Purple and other racing fluids or just use over the counter full synthetic type VI by Valvoline or equivalent from Castrol and Mobil 1.
They all have great heat reliability and longer life than the old fluids, plus have a better operational feel when shifting. You are going to get a 50/50 responce over dry or wet converter install. At least put one quart into the converter before install. Edited by 304-dude - May/19/2017 at 10:29am |

i use Valvoline ATF +4 but tranny fluids aren't what hey used to be from my research so I always throw in a quart of Lucas Transmission treatment (Actually in all my cars including newer imports). I highly suggest a deep pan and a stacked plate cooler In my 727 I run a LPW pan which holds 4 extra quarts

Long time ago, like 1988 or so, in my '69 AMX, swapped in a 727 with a B&M Shift Kit and a B&M Super Holeshot 3500 stall Converter. B&M paperwork said their B&M Fluid was "best", or the "next best" option was Ford Type F Trans Fluid over Dexron as was "standard" used in a 727. So I used Type F. Maybe 15k miles and many many 1/4 mile passes and the same 727 Trans, B&M Converter, and Type F Trans Fluid (probably partially changed once with motor or other work) was still in it when car was sold April 2014 and it's still kickin'. Current owner sent me a video from 2016, 12.6x sec at 10x mph. 343 block, 304/360 crank, cast pistons, '70 Heads, Torker, Holley 750, 3.73 gears, headers, full exhaust, 26x8.5 slicks, pump premium. See the brief burn-out video from the link in my sig
