Just to stir the pot.
Gill Younger (TransGo) prefers the "drag" method. He says, snug the bands until you can't rotate the driveshaft yoke buy hand in either direction. Loosen the rear adjuster until you can just begin to turn the driveshaft in one direction. Then loosen an additional 1/2 turn and tighten the jam nut. Loosen the front adjuster until you can just begin to turn the driveshaft in the other direction. Then loosen an additional 1/2 turn and tighten the jam nut. I presume this method results in the same amount of drag regardless of lever ratio. You guys are a lot smarter than me, but the above method always made sense to me and it sure works. It may not be the ultimate adjustment, but It has to be better than 4 or 5 turns out of adjustment.

Actually, not trying to stir anything up, but I'm always interested in hearing good discussion.

I've heard of this method before, although I have never seen it listed in a factory manual. I presume that when using this driveshaft rotation method that the transmission is in neutral - I also presume that the direction of the driveshaft for the rear band would be reverse (whether that's CCW or CW) and for the front band forward/drive (CCW or CW).
There's also the method of measuring the band lever(?) gap with the pan off, which is supposed to be 5/16". |

I've not heard of the first way but I have adjusted the lever by gap. When you asked, I just quoted the factory specs as not to cause confusion (or arguments) because I have no idea of your skill set. One thing to consider, is that the timing of the shift(s) can get messed up if one thing is changed causing something like a clutch to drag since the shift happened to soon. Just saying... |

I've only used the drag method after installing the Transgo kit as Tached_out mentioned. The kit changes release timing and pressures too on most units by using different spring tensions or enlarging exhaust hole sizes, so I wouldn't use that method without a shift kit . And it's a pretty simple kit to install as far as Transgo kits go.
