Hi all,
I'm about to remove/replace the leaf spring shackles on my 72 Gremlin (258). I took a quick peek underneath, looks like the bolts that run through the bushings may not slide out due to frame obstruction?? Is that correct?? I was really tired when I looked at it, hoping I just didn't inspect it enough. Any tips for removing these? Thanks all, Kensey Pittsburgh, PA |

There should be 2 bolts holding the upper shackle mount to the unibody. remove those and then jack up the car and the assembly will move down enough. You will probably have to unbolt the lower shock mount as well. Not sure about a 72 Gremlin but on later models and the Spirit the top half of the shackle is not as wide as the lower to fit between the frame and fuel tank and an aftermarket shackle has to be bent to get it to fit.

Ha! This is the kinda info I need to know ahead of time. Thanks 401harry.
Can anyone confirm that the shackles on a 72 Gremlin are narrower on the upper mount? About how much? I just don't want any surprises when I "tackle the shackle." Thanks |
