71 to 74 Javelin used the same radios. You had three options. AM only, AM - 8 Track, and AM/FM.
AM only has no fader, while the later has a fader dial with wiring to the speakers added to the dash. Stereo door speakers and rear speakers require the fader circuit. |

Does the fader have a 3 prong plug? Anybody have a picture of that?

I did a search and found AM could have optional fader control with rear speaker. The AM unit would have 3 a pronged control, as with the AM/FM and AM 8 Track the fader control would be different, as there is a balance dial Not sure about the door speaker system, if it is available with AM/FM, FM became FM stereo later after 72. So I would assume 73 on up had door speaker options with AM/FM radios. Edited by 304-dude - Jul/18/2017 at 1:33pm |

71-74 Javelin radios are often mistaken for '73-77 Hornet/Gremlin radios, which look very much alike. A '71-74 Javelin radio, however, has a mounting bracket on top of the case, and chrome (vs. black plastic) pushbuttons, and will not have the little fader 'lever' above the dial as a '74 and up Hornet/Gremlin AM-FM stereo will have. '74 radio has the American Motors on the faceplate to the right, not centered as on the earlier ones. Interesting little move...I'm not sure why!

Maybe this will help.
Photo of Fader Control Assembly on '74 with 3 speakers (1 ea in door and 1 in rear package tray).... The Rear Speaker plays all the time, this fader selects right or left door speakers. **This set up does not have a speaker in the front dash speaker grill**.... |

A shell? You mean my stripped car... not for sale. Actually this is the only AMC I have, and have a small collection of parts for when there is someone in need. One bad thing of all the parts, is the original engine and tranny. They were fresh and no leaks. But i had no use for them, because they are pre 72 and out in mid state IL. Location is everything when it comes to shipping or pickup. Though if you are looking for something just post in the wanted section, there are a few members with parts cars, shells, and even restorable runners. I have been very slow with work, mostly mods. I actually am going to use a modified Hornet AM/FM with fader slider in my car. The Javelin buttons had to be modified to fit correctly, as the chromed push buttons are not like the stubby black buttons on the Hornet radio. |

Well here is the whole story, bought the speaker kit from a forum member Kit #8992725. can't find the kit in the parts book. Found the harness #3211576 and speaker #3632708. The book states they are for a 71 Javelin.
It says less tape player and less fm multiplex.I mostly bought the kit for the speaker harness mostly for the harness than my curiosity came in. The harness has a 3 prong for the radio plug in and 2 speaker setup, one up front and one rear. But from what I understand from another forum member that has a 71 am radio it only has a 2 prong plug on it for the speaker. I have a few 8-tracks setups that has the 3 prong setup, a 69 and a 70, it would fit. The am/fm and am radio I have for the 70 has only 2 prong. So that is where I am at, that is why I am trying to find some 71-74 cars and find out who has what. Thanks

The 3 prong connector should be 1 input 2 out. On monoral sound radios, AM, and 71 AM/FM, two connectors are ground and amplified signal to the front speaker.
Ground can be from the body or chaises that the speaker attaches to, but should be an integral part of the harness. Example: the radio 2 wire connection goes to a two wire connection on the control harness with the control having 3 wires. Not knowing if ground is ran with the wire to the rear speaker, I can assume the rear speaker connector has either a ground wire and mounting terminal to be screwed In place near by, or a ground wire with the amplified signal wire from the control. If using a multiplexed FM radio or an AM / 8 Track unit, there would be a different control and speaker harness. |
