I am looking at a 71 Matty on Craigslist, and the 304 engine and tranny that Dan has posted for sale. My Q is, did the big cars use a different crossmember between 6 and 8 cyl engines like the smaller cars, or are they the same, just different motor mounts? He also has a Chryco tranny, but I thought the Matty used a B/W, so is the tranny x-member the same, or different? Thanks for listening/reading.

Ooops, forgot, the Matty is a 6 cyl A/T car. Also, would it have a AMC20 rear already?

I used to have a 72 sedan 258 6 cylinder. Had to change the engine crossmember when I dropped in a 401 but the trans member was fine. They have a bunch of holes to move forward or back and pretty sure the small cars use the same one. Yes you have a 20 rear end as thats the only axle AMC used in the Rebels and Matadors with the coil spring 4 link rear end (Thats a good thing) probably has 3:15 gears with the 6. Your trans is likely a BW unit unfortunately

Just re-read your post. The 71 trans mount is different at the trans attachment point and will need changed to a 72 up 904 trans type if you are going to change drivelines (easy). You will need a V8 engine crossmember. Any 71 up big body V8 unit will work...Javelin, Matador Ambo...good luck with your project!

Will the Bulltear 6 to V8 swap mounts work, by chance?

The longer wheelbase Ambassador engine crossmember won't work -- engine perches in different location. Trans crossmember will work, trans in same location in body. Engine crossmember is further forward so engine perches are further back on the crossmember. The engine crossmember of the Matador Coupe may be different also, not sure if engine placement is different from the sedans and wagons or not. You can use any sedan/convert/wagon crossmember from a 67-78 Matador though -- anything but the Coupe (just not sure about Coupe...).
