    Posted: Dec/07/2019 at 10:40am
I have a '71 Javelin and the center reverse light was replaced with a piece of sheet metal since they probably couldn't find one.

I was able to find a complete set of '71 tail light pieces with the housings but it needs to be cleaned up and the emblem replaced.  I have the gaskets for the tail lights, the weather seals, and an emblem.

What's the best way to dissemble something this old so I can clean it up, replace the seals and emblem, then put it all back together?

I thought I read somewhere to soak them in a tub of hot water to loosen them up and make them a bit more pliable to prevent breakage.

Ideas?

I've been trying to figure out how to get these assemblies apart, cleaned and repaired with out wrecking anything, I'd really like to know. Those clear back up lenses and red tail light lenses are difficult at best to deal with.

71 is no more difficult to remove than a 72.

I use a bathroom sink stopper pull plunger rod, and tie a wee bit of old rag and cotton ball over the end. Then use the end to push through the socket hole and press the lense out from inside.

My extremely bad center lense from my 71 popped out without adding damage. Though I was not being genital, expecting the fine spider Web cracks to break away from pressure.

No damage that I could detect outside from normal wear and tear, on all the lenses I have popped out.

A good soaking with dish soap works great for me, softened that old gasket right up. I did the over night bit.
