Don't ignore the front suspension.

Sounds like the front end alignment to me. Depending on how hard this particular 390 pulls you have to look at the fact that the alignment changes when the front end pops up from the torque and acceleration of the motor. When the suspension is topping out under hard acceleration the suspension angles can change from what they are when the car is at or near normal cruising height.   I bet your camber is changing a lot on one or both of the front wheels when accelerating hard and then letting off.

I think there should be an additive put in the oil with a factory limited slip.
You did not mention it when you changed the oil? Not that it will cure your problem but you can damage the posi with out it and have a new problem.

Check the front suspension, perhaps taking it to a good frame/suspension shop. I had a similar problem on my Son's Grem - idle arm was shot. If you car is pulling right under acceleration, especially with a "mild motor," check the front.

Found the problem. It was pretty deceptive, but found it when replacing the rebound clip. When testing the limited slip, I would spin the left wheel and observed that both wheels would turn in the same direction. I expected that. I replaced the rebound clip on the right leaf and after I was finished, I spun the right wheel hub. It turned freely and the driveshaft or left wheel didn't turn! Anyway, it appears that the hub spun on the axle. That explains the torque steer. It was really bad, like driving on wet ice. Tomorrow I'm taking the axle back to the rebuilder for repair.

This was a learning experience.Roger Schweger's article on rebuilding AMC 20's was really informative. Because of that article I now understand the AMC 20 two-piece axle thing. That's what the hobby is all about.

Thanks for all the inputs, but a lesson learned here. It's really difficult to explain what is happening and nothing replaces first hand real time observation of a problem.

Thanks again, John (gwryder)

Sounds like an axle nut was not torqued tight enough. Spinning a hub usually damages both the axle and hub, hope the shop can find replacement parts. Seems to me there was a 70 differential for sale here not long ago. Might be time for moser axles.

Took the axle back to the shop in Bay City today. They recommended mosers too, so I'm going for it. They said a couple of weeks
turnaround at best. I hope it's not too long, summer's too short.

If there's a problem with getting the mosers on time, my backup plan is to put the parts AMX's 3.15 axle on. It'll be a little sluggish compared to the 3.54, but probably good on the highway.

IIRC my Mosers took about a week to get them but that was many years ago.
Good luck and let us know if that was the fix.
