I have a BBO 70 with the rear window defroster ( yes 1 0f 56 or so), I am looking for someone who knows where the relay is supposed to be located on the inside dash structure? Also my switch just has the button and nut not a square black plate. Did 70 have a plate? Also at AMO Gettysburg I saw a 70 with the button located in dash to the right of the steering column? Is the right place, I did not get the car with the original dash, it's melted and sitting in someones garage in AZ (spiteful deal between that person and the person I purchased car from) I have all I need for the final resto coming soon (not soon enough to take to Kenosha though). Any info will help! Thanks!

Vince, one of my 70s Javelins has the rear defroster window too.
My Javelin has a Black Plate like you mentioned, 70 Javelin 009 by SirDigger, on Flickr you can see it next to the steering colum. I havent traced the relay, but i will take a look on saturday. |

In the '70 Owner's Manual (2nd Printing) the Javelin/AMX dash pictured with all the options has the RWD button and light on the right side of the column, with no metal plate. I can't say that's a definitive word on the subject, but it merits a closer look.
Digger, I am pretty sure the little metal switch plate on yours is actually off of a Gremlin/Hornet with the option, offered in '73 and up. Edited by ramblinrev - Jun/30/2017 at 12:24pm |

This could be a great discussion. I removed a complete assembly, glass,
switch, and wiring from an original 70 Amx about 7-8 years ago and sold it here on the forum. It was on left side of column with the black plate, similar to holgers photo. |

The OP also is wanting to know where the relay to the rear window defroster is as well. If by chance you know, that would be great.

I have this switch and plate with a few wire pig tails. Obviously for a rear window defroster. Just not sure of the actual application. The switch also as a small light attached so you know when it's on.

Here's the AMC parts book scoop on Heated Rear Window Switch and Wiring for 1970 Javelin/AMX.
Group # 3.770 Switch 363 6639 (same as 73/74 Gremlin and Hornet). NO escutcheon plate! Light 363 6640 (same as 73/74 Gremlin and Hornet) Wire from Starter solenoid to relay 321 0988 Harness from Relay to rear window 321 0986 Relay 363 6641 (used on most models through '74 or '75) So, I'm willing to bet that the "rear window/rear defogger" metal tag attached to the switch does not belong on the '70 Javelin/AMX. You should have an unlabeled switch and indicator light to the right of the steering column. (And those may be located on that removable lower steering column plastic panel-as per Owner's Manual-or above where the Rear Fader switch would be, on the dash structure itself. I'd like to see more information on original cars to sort the 'location' piece out!) Chuck, yours is off of a 73/74 Hornet or Gremlin....switch and light are correct for '70; plate is not. Paul |

This 1970 Javelin was an original family (current owner brother of original owner) car at Gettysburg and I took this pic of the switch:

Thanks, Ian.
I think that is the definitive picture. The 2nd Printing Owner's Manual I referenced shows that same switch and light combination, but down and to the left on the trim piece of the dash. But those owner's manuals have some errors in them, largely due to the pictures being taken of pre-production cars/dashes. |
