    Posted: Apr/20/2019 at 9:17am
The 70 AMX I just brought home has only the driver side outside mirror.  The base of the mirror is chrome and the upper part of the mirror is body color.  This seems odd to me.
The guy I bought the car from had a pair of NOS chrome mirrors, but it didn't seem right to me.  I realize that the passenger side mirror was an option and not common.
  So what is correct?
A second question:  Would a shadow mask car have black mirrors or body color?  I've seen both in pictures.

Thanks, everyone!

Mike

'70 was the first year for the 'sport' mirror design.
An all chrome, driver's side, manual mirror was standard.
A remote, painted head/chrome base mirror was the only option. (I believe these to be body-colored on all, including the shadow mask cars.)
A right side mirror was not a factory option at all, but rather a dealer accessory. You could get either painted head or chrome to match the driver's side.

An all chrome remote mirror from a later Javelin, would not have come on a '70 Javelin or AMX. It of course would look and fit just fine.

I been wondering about this issue with the mirrors. I have seen different variations of the outside mirrors with the Javelin and AMX's.
My 71' SST has a chrome base and a painted top.

While this 71 AMX also has a Chrome base and painted top.

My 72' AMX had an all chrome mirror on both sides, and so does this 70' AMX.

So was there any kind of standard?

Read my notes above, again.
They apply at least to '70 and '71 model year.

Maybe the picture, but the 70 AMX in the last picture looks like a Gremlin/Hornet Mirror with that odd angle????

I agree with Paul in his application statement....No Remote, Chrome head driver and dealer installed passenger side.

Now you guy have me thinking. Am in the middle of doing a resto on my one owner 70 AMX that i bought in 1993. When i bought it it had a chrome head remote mirror and a matching chrome passenger mirror.  Didn't think to ask the owner if he swapped mirrors. Now i have to check the part numbers on those mirrors.

If you have a '70 or '71, an all chrome, remote mirror means it has been changed. Not surprising on a car that was 23 when you got it!

I could not find passenger side rear view mirrors in the 1967-72 AMC Parts Manual...

Dealer Accessories are generally NOT in the Part Manual, they are a separate list of Group 15 Parts.  They carried a Part Number that started 899 xxxx.
