We are finishing a 70 AMX and the original hood hinges and springs were used. The original springs would not hold the hood open. We have bought 2 more sets of used hinges and springs - same issue - hood will not stay up on it's own. Is this a common issue, and is there a reasonably easy cure? Thanks, Willie.

The 1970 AMX hood is almost two inches longer than a 1968-69 AMX hood and has a large hood scoop. So it has got to be heavier. The AMC 1967-1971 Collision Parts Catalog has an illustration of the hood, hinges and spring on page 74.
It lists 1968-69 hood spring as part # 360 0575
It lists 1970 hood spring as part # 363 5232 It may be you have the 1968-69 AMX springs which are not able to keep the hood open due to the 1970's hood weight. |

That's probably the issue. No idea what was on the car when it came to us to finish assemble. I do know one of the hinge sets is from a 68 Javelin. Not sure about set #3. Thanks for the reply. |

Thanks for all the reply's. We tried 3 sets of "mystery springs" thought to be 70 AMX with no luck. We found a set of hinges and springs known to be 70 AMX. Upon installation they barely held hood open. In the interest of safety we fabbed and installed a prop rod.
If the car wasn't finish painted we would probably try harder to locate and install stronger springs - just tired of dealing with the issue while trying not to damage a freshly painted car. |
