after beating myself up for a week I decided to go with the bf Goodrich radial ta's on my 70 amx. i believe the radial equivalent to the original polyglas F70-14" is the 215/70-14". i would like to go slightly wider with the 225/70-14" on the stock 14"x6" magnums, will that work safely without rubbing or fitment issues? thanks, john

John, I think you could go as high as 235/70/14's and I'll tell you why.
I worked for GF.Goodrich back when the TA's 1st. came out, and I had a set of 15x7" wide Chrome Magnums I wanted to put on my car.
I couldn't get E60/15's in the TA's, so I had to go to F60/15's instead. Clearance was always a problem.
I had those tires on my car for over 17 years. When I replaced them with newer TA's, I installed 235/60/15's and have had no clearance problems since.

I have 235/60/15's on the front of my 70 AMX too. I think there's a clearance problem with the 69 and earlier Trunnion suspensions.

John, my car's a 69, and like I said the 235/60/15's fit fine.
Actually (after checking the statistics on 68 vs 70's) the trunion cars should have more clearance.
68/69 X's had a 58.37" front track. The 70's had 59.08". Both "test" cars had E70/14's.

The clearance problem with the trunnion cars is that the inside wall of the tire rubs the edge of the trunnion where the spring seats using rims with the stock offset.
Long time AMC fan. Ambassador 343, AMX 390, Hornet 360, Spirit 304 and Javelin 390. All but javelin bought new.

I've never noticed any sign of rubbing behind the wheel. (My wheels came off a Boss 302 by the way.
When I installed F60/15's on my 69, the only clearance problem I had was the outer edge of the tire would rube the "lip" on the lower front fender. I angled it back and then it cleared.
235/60's are just slightly smaller the old F60/15's were. But slightly larger than what the "Factory" stock E60/15's were.
I see John decided to go with the skinny meats anyway, so it's a moot point.

I put H60/15s on the back of my '70 MD Javelin on the stock Machine rims. When I went to the L60/15, I mounted them on chrome reverse rims. The tires were Goodyear and I paid $35.00 a piece for them. They were blems!

The Boss 302 rims at 14x7 did require some minor grinding at the hubs to fit the AMC hubs. They worked better and looked great, but they did use a trim ring instead of chromed outers. 14x7 rims can easily us a 245-60-14 tire. 14x6 must use a smaller tire.
