Thanks Roger. That is the photo that confirms it for me. The tabs on the new lock ring must go under or even past the slots on the gas tank ring. The originals (at least from your photo) don't seem to have such a high arch to the lock ring tabs so they could probably be tapped in fairly easily. My new one poses more of a problem so I will probably have to bend or tap the tabs down slightly to get them to slide fully into the proper position. Thanks again. I appreciate it.

The originals did not have the dimple that acts as a detent. I would hammer those dimples down a little so it will work.

Thanks very much guys. Tapped down the tabs on the new lock ring and got it to slide into place. I appreciate the advice very much.
