You've got to remove the instrument cluster overlay by removing the three or four phillips screws along the bottom edge and pulling the bottom toward you and then up and out. This will expose the base of the wiper and lights knobs. Rotate the wiper knob and look for a small notch at the bottom end where it attaches to the shaft. Use a small screwdriver and push on the little metal spring tab to press the tab toward the rear of the car. Pull on the knob while putting pressure on the tab and it will release from the shaft.
