I confirm addic's response. After draining the gas from my tank, I also used a shop vac and let it blow through the tank for an hour or so. Used my trusty Bernzomatic to heat the filler tube near the seam. The solder they used melts at a low temp so it comes loose quickly. just give it a little twist and it should come right out. Make sure you wear a glove! I had one that had a "tang" on the end and needed a little coaxing. To reinstall, I fluxed and tinned the neck, held it in place and applied the torch. It slid right in and I applied a little extra solder. After everything cooled, I applied a light coat of JB Weld around the seam just to prevent any leaks. This was on a new tank I sourced from Jeff Kennedy in Ohio.

FYI,
The solder that is used for the filler neck to tank connection is 50/50 lead/tin. The melting temperature ( turns into a liquid) is 421 degrees F. The solid temperature is 361 degrees F. The pasty range is 60 degrees F. Between 361 and 421, the solder is more like a paste than a liquid and can be moved around with wooden paddles with melted wax on them, just like the old body guys used to do.. Wear Gloves. 361F burns skin instantly. Edited by White70JavelinSST - Aug/22/2017 at 4:58pm |

I had the same problem of removing the inlet from the tank. I flush it out with water, blew it out with air and then use an old farm boy trick. I raked up some dry leaves and grass and made a trail with the same about 15 foot long, set fire to the tail , which traveled up to the tank and burned the leaves under the tank.( send unit removed ) No explosion. used torch to unsolder gas neck.
