My carb leaks a few drops when the shaft at the rear is turned. It seems to be coming out where my finger is indicating here.....Any hints on what would cause this??

Is it leaking around the throttle shaft? There is a bushing in there that can wear out. I have had so called rebuilt carburetors from major remanufacturers weep there and I had to send them back.

All the kits I have bought never had shaft bushings. Maybe the older carb kits had them but I am going back to the early 80's Dave ----

I know that when some places rebuild the carbs they put in a bushing. Maybe there is no bushing originally but if worn when rebuilt they could be drilled and bushed. I never took and original apart to check but assumed that installing a new bushing meant replacing an existing bushing. Perhaps that is not the case.
Anyway, if it is leaking it needs a bushing. Edited by 6768rogues - May/04/2012 at 1:27pm |

Just re-read your original post: if it leaks a bit only when you turn
the throttle shaft, and the engine is NOT running, that is likely NORMAL
for a carb with some shaft wear -- when you turn the shaft, it operates
the accelerator pump, which dumps liquid gas down the throat; with no
air flow likely it dribbles down the side of the bore, onto the shaft,
and out the worm bushing.
Patient: "Doctor, it hurts when I move my arm like this..." Doctor: "Don't move your arm like that." Minor shaft wear on an old carb is typical and harmless. The idle mixture screw will compensate for it; if the screw adjustment is close to normal don't worry about it. |
