Question, before I get to frustrated and throw this shifter in the woods. I am reassemling it and the shift rod slips over the rectangular shaft fairly easily. The rectangular part is not sticking out far enough to catch the neutral safety switch bracket. Am i missing something? Any tricks to make it protrude further? The rod appears to be in as far as it will go.

Are you sure the tranny engagement is in park and the shifter is in park as well. If they are not in proper alignment the shaft and pin will not center up.

The shifter is on my workbench. As shown in the picture, the neutral safety bracket has to slip over the rectangular piece that the shift rod is sitting on. Right now the shifter is flush, I need another 1/8" so the bracket will remain stationary and not slide back and forth

OK, was thinking it was the shift rod alignment.
Even though I have not seen a 68 shifter assembly, I can figure thing out by how things are sort of like a puzzle. I would need a not so close up of the switch and bracket. As I think the switch has a slotted lever that may have the bracket slip in and actuate. Until Menace or someone who knows 68 and 69 shifters... I hope my thoughts about engagement will guide you further. |

Let me explain better, I realize part A in the picture slips over B. My problem is that C is not protruding, it is sitting flush. It seems it would have to protrude at least the thickness of part A to hold A in place. If that makes any sense.

Ah so the shaft is too far back, as the lever seems to be mounted further away from the hole.
Was the shift lever removed from the shift mechinizem, like replacing a bushing or lubing the pin. If so, it may have been installed 180 degrees. Thus offset away from the hole. Edited by 304-dude - Jun/27/2016 at 8:31pm |
