That fixed it! Did you weld in a good section of an original gusset or replace the entire thing by drilling out the factory welds? Instead of drilling out my factory welds I was thinking about just cutting the good set of gussets I have right at the top edge and welding to the orignal flange already on my car.

I had a shop put them in and they cut the top of the good gusset and left the stock mounting holes. I think it came out really good. They touched up a spot on my firewall too. They probably could have spent a little more time grinding down the welds better, but I don't mind since it'll be covered by the fender anyway.

Figured I'd throw up a picture with the fenders back on. Trying to get all the bugs worked out and drive it for the summer. Feels a lot slower than when I first had it, probably just in my head though. I did a compression test and it was 130 across the board. Not sure what cam is in the car, vacuum at idle is 14". Do these numbers sound about right? I'm only running 6* inital timing right now, need to double check to see what my total is. |

might be moisture in the fuel if its been sitting for awhile, carb passages getting gummed up etc....put some dry gas in it. Thats happened to me before...would drive the car for a few weeks put it away for a few months and it would feel like it was just breaking in again. After cylcling through a tank or 2 of fresh fuel it would come back alive.
Also if the car sits for awhile the brakes can stick, or they can self adjust too tight after awhile, that will cause drag and make the car slower. Just some things to think about. |

Well, I've slowly been getting some things fixed on this car.
Had an exhaust put on a few years ago and once the car was quiet I found out the transmission was shot. Would make noise in 1-2-3. Sent it out to Kirkwood for a rebuild probably going on 2 years now. In that time I took the rear end out and had it freshened up, kept the 4.11 gears and put some Moser one piece axles in. All of that has been sitting in the garage over the winter, and it's finally starting to warm up. I bought a set of caltracs and split mono leaf's to replace the stock leafs and torque links. Cleaned up the Hurst shifter yesterday and put it in the car. I'll be installing the rear brakes tonight and hopefully have the rear in the car over the weekend. After that it's fluids and hopefully a shakedown test sometime next week. Feels nice to finally get into this again, even if it is taking years (decades?) Thank you for posting. Looks like you're making good progress. Hard finding time to work on the cars after your full time life duties.
Being a 68 AMX it would have had the older style shifter (non Hurst). The Hurst shifter you have there is the aftermarket shifter Hurst offered for the 1968 cars. Since the 68 cars have their own unique floor hump location (more towards the side to side centerline of the transmission), the portion of the shifter that holds the shifter arm is offset. Above said, can you post a few pictures of the interior, showing the shifter coming through the floor? I've never seen one installed in the stock 1968 floor, and wondered how they looked. Thank you and best of luck with your cool project! Rich C.

Rich,
I’ll take some more pictures this weekend. I believe the floor was cut to accommodate the shifter. |

Update:
I had everything installed and was working out some kinks. Decided to do a hole shot and I guess with all the rear suspension upgrades the car decided it liked to grip now and I found a weak link in my axle tubes. Spun the right tube pretty good and crushed my left spring perch. I should have had them all reinforced when I had the rear end gone through. Looks like the rear main seal is leaking too, I guess that's what happens when it sits for a few years. I'm hoping it can be saved, looks pretty gnarly with the rear still in the car. The plan now is to get that fixed, have my gas tank sealed since it's leaking a bit, and get the rear quarters patched up.
