I am installing the front carpet in my 68 AMX. I think I know the answer but I want to be certain before I start trimming and then screw it up. Does the windshield washer foot pump assembly mount on top of the carpet of under it? Also is there anything else in the under dash/ floor board area that would mount on top or under the carpet I should know about. Sorry for these simple silly questions but my car did not have any carpet when I bought it . Thanks

Yes.Directly under the am/fm radio is a bracket that bolts to the floor hump and helps support the dash. after carpet is positioned cut slot for gas pedal mount. Don't believe my 68 AMX has foot pump for windshield washer because it has electric pump.

I was hoping to get back out to the garage this weekend and finally install the carpet. Another question can to mind. The firewall insulation that is under the dash has holes for push in fasters that look like big rivets. I believe these fasteners go through the carpet and through the firewall.. Does the carpet go over the fire wall insulation where the push in fasteners would pass thru the carpet and the cut out holes in the firewall insulation or does the carpet somehow go under the firewall insulation?

In my '69 the front carpet had sewn-in 'openings' to hang the front top edge of the carpet onto those 'T' Shaped plastics firewall plugs in some number of places... I removed 1 'T' shaped carpet hanger on the passenger side near the tunnel and enlarged to 'T' shaped plug hole to maybe 1-1/4" dia when I moved some engine compartment electrics into the passenger footwell... Another of those black plastic 'T' Shaped carpet hangers is visible just below the relocated horn relay on the right. are those the things you are asking about?

Yes those are the T Plugs/Rivet type Fasteners that I was talking about.The aftermarket carpet that I have does not have sewn in openings .

The plastic push in fasteners are intended to go through the carpet to secure the top edges of the carpet to keep it from coming down.

Long time AMC fan. Ambassador 343, AMX 390, Hornet 360, Spirit 304 and Javelin 390. All but javelin bought new.
