Could someone tell me if this steering column can be saved? I assumed the rod was two pieces, but when I removed the bearing i found its all one piece. Can the piece that has been cut off be removed and another put in? Looks like you should be able to do it, but ??. Thanks |

All of that can be fixed but it's a matter of finding the parts. Is it a tilt column? If it's not, I'd just find a replacement..

The problem is you have to find tilt column parts to fix it. The bottom shaft has to come from another tilt column from that vintage. Won't be a cheap fix.

Yes... You can see the two plastic pins that hold the lower shaft inside of the upper shaft. That was part of the collapsible column feature. An accident impact would break the pins and drive the lower shaft inside of the upper shaft so the driver wouldn't get crushed or impaled by the steering column. If you drive those plastic pins out, you can remove the lower shaft... |

I have a 69 column I cut further past the pins... but it is a standard type. The shaft that has been cut on yours looks like it is very similar to mine. Though, I am not sure if I saved the section you need. Will check tomorrow as I will be freezing my arse off replacing a bad y pipe on our daily driver. The shaft if still around will be where I will be working.

On newer columns I have taken that joint apart and the lower section is the same tilt column or non tilt. Parts books will not show it as it is not designed to be taken apart. I would bet that the lower piece is the same on 68=69 columns as well. They can be a challenge to take apart as they are not meant to be taken apart. I would drill out the plastic pin and fill the hole with hot glue when done. I would disassemble the column and separate that piece to avoid damage to other pieces.

The lower shaft is different on tilt & non-tilt columns. Tilt columns have a removable mount on the rag joint end. Non-tilt columns have a fixed, non removable mount end. Both on post & pre 70 columns.
