Dont know for sure what kind of trans this has except a broken one. LOL It is at a trans shop now. He has said there was parts in the pan when he removed it. Shop came highly recommended from the Chevelle club I belong to so not to worried yet. He has said something like it was stuck in reverse at some point then forced into drive. Reverse is what was in the pan and the forward clutch plates are fused to the friction plates. At least I think this is the jest of what he told me. My question is at what point do I give up on this trans and maybe put in something else. (turbo 350 or 400 and what else will fit) he is currently looking for parts at some place in Ohio. All suggestions welcome. Thanks

I guess we are talking about an auto if parts were found in the pan. What model auto and what is it behind motor wise as that can make a difference on how to fix what you have or if you want to swap in a different auto.

I am not up on the BW autos but if you do a search I know there have been posts on who to get parts from for them.
Sorry I cant help more I am sure others will be by that can help more.

Any competent old time transmission shop that actually repairs or rebuilds transmissions should be able to fix you up. The BW M-11 is basically the same as the Ford FMX. Changing out the trans. to something different and more modern, as attractive sounding as that may be, is not easily done with the earlier cars that used the Borg Warner automatics.
Long time AMC fan. Ambassador 343, AMX 390, Hornet 360, Spirit 304 and Javelin 390. All but javelin bought new.

Actually, it is. You can get a trans adapter from AMC specialists (like Kennedy American or American Parts Depot) to put a more modern AMC trans behind it. Problem with that is AMC 2WD trannys are hard to find in most areas.

I'd see about getting that trans rebuilt first. Northwest Transmission Parts has most rebuild parts, but hard parts may be hard -- but there are used rebuildable cores out there. If it can't be rebuilt or you can't find one, Novak and Advance Adapters has GM to AMC adapters. I prefer Novak, but that's just me. Prices are about the same. Make sure the flexplate (or adapter) is for a 66-71 AMC V-8 engine -- the 72+ uses a different crank flange design.  A GM overdrivre auto sounds good, but remember that they generally need a lower geared rear axle. A standard old three speed will be about the same as the original.

Thanks for all the insight. Still waiting on the final word on parts. Though I don't think he is very optimistic being he asked me if he could store it outside till he gets the parts. Guess we will wait and see. Just killing me not to drive it though.

Update: He found all the parts needed which is pretty much everything. He sent me pictures of all he found wrong with it and I agree it all needs to be replaced. So long and short of it should be done in a week or so and come in around 2K. Little more than I hoped but we are talking a 67 here. Like they say if you want to play you have to pay.

Looking for an update...

I have a 67 DPL 290 3-auto. Not sure if the 290 and 343 transmissions differ, but mine has been sitting for more than a year while I looked for front end metal. I now have it and when my rambler gets straightened out the 67 will be moved into the garage for body disassembly. When it's all apart the engine/trans will come out for rebuilds. There is a shop not far that specializes in AMC and Mopar transmissions that said parts and labor for a trans build would be $800. They are having a special. I think it would normally be closer to 1200.

Anyway, I'm wondering how it went. Did they get it built? Is it back in the car? How's it driving? Any issues?
