Thanks for all the help so far guys, but now there is new problem.
I managed to get a 2nd hand Carter WCD and I put it on this afternoon. It started up and idled, but was running incredibly rich and ran with what is sounding like a misfire. I turned the adjustment screws in as far as they can go, which stopped the mass amount of smoke/petrol coming out the exhaust, but it still runs with the 'misfire'.
Any ideas?

Several of us have suggested it might be a loose manifold at the head, but you've never indicated if you've checked that yet, or not.
It makes it hard to advise you when we don't get feedback on the advice we do give.

I had a look at the manifold bolts yesteday afternoon, and the bolt closest to the firewall was really loose. I tried tightening the rest of the manifold bolts and although some were able to be tightened, none were as bad as the other one.
I also pulled apart my original carb, gave everything a thorough clean, and put it back on the engine. It started up and idled for about 10 seconds and then died again. Both the floats seem to be ok as well, so I'm beginning to think it could be bad petrol or even a piece of casting blocking an idle port

If you take the top off the origional carb, is there gas in the float bowl ?
How are you checking the float height ?
Do one attempted correction at a time, then test. If you do more than one, you may introduce a new problem that will just confuse things even more. Edited by tyrodtom - Mar/17/2011 at 8:39pm |

Ok, update time.
After a long time waiting for the Carbie to be re-built (I don't have the facilities for it right now, otherwise I would have done it myself), the car is idleing again.
But now there is a new problem. After the car is started, it runs ok. There is a slight miss however, and I'm not too concerned about that just yet. When you put it into gear it is ok as well, but as soon as you drive off, things start to get interesting.
As long as I have my footon the accelerator, the engine is fine, but as soon as I only lightly have my foot on it, the engine wants to stall. If i put my foot down a bit more, it misses and sometime stalls, and sometimes gets up and goes like it should.
Has anyone had a similar problem? Now that the carbies have been rebulit (and essentally eliminated as the cause of the problem) could there be something going wrong in the distributor? It has a new condenser, points, cap, plugs and leads, but could it be the bushes that have gone?

I have had the bushing on the pivot plate go bad in the distributor. Look at the plate the points sit on, it has a white nylon bushing, if there's any freeplay there, your dwell will vary pretty wildly

I was going to say vac advance in the dist may have died. Points maybe closed up? Bushings in dist gone bad? GM 6 cyl 250 or 292 mid '70s to early '80s HEI dist with the cam drive gear from your original dist is a decent upgrade for spark.

Fat chance of finding a chev 6 HEI dizzy down here. GMH had their own motor and the dizzy is nothing like the chev one.

They go for @$100 here modded for Jeeps on Evilbay. Shipping would probably be another $50 to OZ (I used to send carbs down there about 10 years ago when a buddy sent a cargo container full of cars, they got tucked in for a few $$)
