Firstly Let me introduce myself....

My name is Jeremy and im 25, hailing from beautiful New Zealand. This country is brimming with japanese plastic imports and I have finally managed to get my hands on my dream car... (Although most people here dont even know what it is)...

A 65 Classic 660 4 door, its a very original example, with a 232 thats only done 55k miles from the factory.
Shes solid American metal but was apparently assembled here in New Zealand and galv dipped, she is factory antigua red and original right-hand drive made for our NZ roads.

These cars are extremely rare over here and I've been looking for a long time when this one came up, its had a crash in the rear left quarter panel, this is the only significant body damage on the car. Im hoping I can find a quarter panel skin ans they unstitch from the guard itself.

The car is currently completely stripped and I am stripping the old paint off it ready for a new coat of Spies Hecker Indiana Red, perhaps with a gold pearl.

The interior I have retrimmed in black vinyl with red velour stripes.

This project has taken some time so far, but Im expecting to have it back on the road by November, the only things that will potentially halt my progress is finading a rear quarter panel skin, (have the technical service manual and may end up fabricating one from the engineers drawings).

Other than that im replacing all the rubbers and seals on the vehicle because they're all perished, Doug at americanpartsdepot.com has been really helpfull and can supply them all.... i hope.

Other than that the only other parts that need revitalising are the headlight bezels/cups and the door sill plates, or kick panels whatever you call them over there. Any NOS parts around the place?

Im hoping to get pics up here to show you guys, I have progress photos on my camera but it seems this forum only allows photos from the web to be shown? Any way rounnd this as id love to hear your comments on this RAMBLER DOWNUNDER Big smile

Cheers,
Jeremy

I stripped the guards off and removed the doors today... and I was surprised to see I had to actually cut the guard off the body as its welded and braised top and bottom haha these cars really were built to last!!
Have begun stripping the pain off and going back to bare metal and I just cant belive A: How well this paints on there, and B: Just how good these steelwork is.

AND NO RUST! anywhere!! Smile

Shes coming along slowly but surely, its about now I wish I could afford to just send it off to a media blaster but this way is allowing me to see where all the cover ups have been made if any, the rear lower guards seem to be full of bog (cant remember what you americans call it), but will have progress shots of the classic up this evening... please post your comments.

Before deconstruction began
Deconstruction begins, the guards actually had to cut off as they were welded/braized to the body
The arguous task of stripping 45year old enamel
approx 10 hours later
as you can see I have a long way to go, but each day more progress is made and is one day closer to having this classic naked, feel free to leave comment, especially trick and tips... Thanks - Jeremy

The Gaurds were factory brazed on the far top and far bottom edges. This was common as far as I know on all Classic models. Presumably all other models were done also. This must have been standard pactice for AMC. Can anyone else confirm this?

Yes well it certainly came as a surprise to me, I cut them off as neatly as possible and ll leave that to the body shop to weld back on thats for sure... just cant get over how gooder condition the steels in, even the inside of the guards/door panels are relatively rust free and very, very sound. Huddy any idea where i can source door/window rubbers down our part of the world mate, im told repco or supercheap can do them but im talking genuine article, or is that going overboard perhaps?

I'm guessing that guards=fenders?
I hadn't heard that particular term before...
