I am rebuilding a '65 American with '98 4.0 engine, T-10 4speed, and Ranger 8.8 rear end. Saw an ad for Scarebird disc brake kit for AMCs, but they only listed it as fitting '69 - '73 models. They weren't sure what else it would fit. Does anyone know it this kit will fit a 1965 American? Also are the gas tanks from 1964 thru 1969 Americans interchangeable? How about the radiators - will a 1968 American Radiator fit in a 1965?

Yes on the gas tanks. Sedan/hardtop tanks should be interchangeable between 1964 and 1969. Radiator width dimension is the same I believe. The mounting ears on the radiator may be different from the first generation sixes to the second generation sixes and later V8s. Someone here will know for sure. Joe

The Scarebird kit should fit the Americans without any problems. The AMX's and Americans have the same suspension components.

You might have to use a few washers in front of or behind the Scarebird mounting plate to "fine tune" the position of the caliper, but that's about it. The seal adapter rides pretty deep in the seal, so don't panic when you see it. As long as the adapter doesn't push THROUGH the seal it's fine. There's no pressure on the seal, it just keeps dust out mainly, and of course the hot grease gets a little more fluid and needs to be kept in...
