Chippewa, good luck. I'm reading with interest cause my 1962 Classic has also had someone mess with the wiring, looks like to put in an electronic fuel pump. The whole shebang was held in place with elastic bungee cord, which gave way before it reached me.

According to the '64 Classic/Ambo TSM only the V-8 models had a regular ballast resistor. On the 6 cyl models that round 75 ohm resistor acts as a ballast resistor to the coil.

I'm sure we cleared this up a few years ago, the 6 does not have a ballast resistor. I don't think it is on the wiring schematic but is mentioned in the tsm.

The wiring schematic can be confusing, as it has V-8 and six on the same diagram with a note saying "V-8 only". Even has auto and manual trans on the same schematic, with a note for "auto only" items (just one that I can think of, the neutral safety switch).
The six uses an internally resisted coil, no ballast resistor. You can find good 56-65 Rambler wiring diagrams here: http://www.oldcarmanualproject.com/tOCMP/wiring/5765wiring%20diagrams/ramblerindex.htm Lots of other manual and brochures on that site, including a full 1973 AMC TSM. |

On the wiring diagram in my '64 TSM the 75ohm resistor is shown. To the left hand side of the main wiring diagram find the battery and the alternator. Right above the battery to the right you'll see the resistor with an orange wire on it. The other isn't marked (or I didn't take the time to trace it) but it should be an orange w/tracer wire. It's also shown in Figure 14 in the ELECTRICAL section.

I put a meter on mine today. With engine running it reads 14 1/2 volts at + side of coil and 12 1/2 volts at - side. It has the Petronix ignition and coil.

Even though I am now using Petronix ignition, no changes were made to the supply wire to the coil and that part is still original.
Funny thing though, after putting in a 232 and coil from a 67 American, after a few thousand miles the coil burnt out. I tried a new coil that did not require an external resistor but the car would not start. Was it a dud? Now though, I hope that with the Petronix it is back to being reliable again. |

I've amended the wiring diagram in my TSM to show the resistor is for V-8 only. I at one time had my harness all open and could find no resistor.
As for that other orange with tracer to the other resistor shown next to the battery in the diagram that looks like maybe specific to the charging circuit between regulator and alternator. I know the charging light is also orange with white trace. Also note that the blue wire coming from the V-8 starter connects to the yellow for the coil, presumably to give it that 12 volts until the starter is released. That blue wire is absent on the 6 cyl starter. |

Also, I don't remember the details and I am not near my car right now but I think AMC changed the external regulator (and it's small harness for the Motorola alternator during the model year. I know (I think at least.) ( have the old disconnected, obsoleted regulator still mounted on my driver side wheel well. I'll try to provide more details later. Joe

The wiring diagram I posted a link to aren't from the TSMs, but from some pro manual source, I think that just had wiring diagrams. They are more clearly marked and easier to follow than the TSM diagrams.
