Anyone know where I can get an exploded view of a '64 American generator? I took mine apart to paint the case and get a look at the armature/commutator and now it doesn't want to go back together. I must have a bearing out of place but I cant seem to figure it out. Thanks!

Once the generators assembled, how freely should the armature move in the housing? should I be able to easily spin it with my hands?

The TSM images don't scan well.......... and don't show detail. I MAY have some original Ford and Delco info, but as things are going, might take a bit of time to dig up and scan, unfortunately.
Like Bud said - yes to the spin easily. Only resistance should be the brushes against the commutator, but it should spin if you give it a flick of the wrist and keep spinning for a couple seconds or so.

It also won't charge until the fields have been charged. I forget how you do that, has to be shorted across a couple of the terminals. Bill probably remembers how, I'd have to look it up. But get it spinning first!

"polarizing" is pretty easy once it's together and spinning. There are 2 types, and it's done slightly differently for each type.
Polarizing gets residual magnetism set up in the poles.
