Loud knocking begins when I put the car in drive...transmission hesitates before the car moves...Trans? |

What car do you have, 6 or V-8, TT or open drive shaft? Possibly a broken flex plate? If you take the cover off at the front of the torque converter the flex plate is visible, at least on the 6s.

Well, the video is private. Is this a V-8 car? If so it's probably the CV joint in front. That could be a problem! If it's a six cylinder car it could be the universal joint. In either it could be the center carrier bearings.
But first look under the car. The four bolts holding the torque tube to the transmission should be tight and no space between the tube flange and trans. If that looks good take the bolts out. There is a rubber cushion between the end of the tube and the transmission. That deteriorates over time. It will cause a lot of noise while driving if it's bad. Galvin's can supply a replacement. A good first check is to put the rear axle on jack stands and put the car in gear. Does it still knock? Then it is likely the CV (or universal) joint, or the carrier bearing. If it doesn't, then the cushion is probably deteriorated. One more thing I just thought of! The 63-66 Classic/Ambo/Marlin has a rubber mounted trans crossmember. Most people don't know that and don't check the mounts -- just the motor and transmission mounts. The crossmember has a rubber mount between the body and CM on each end. The mounts are in a steel channel piece so that the CM won't fall out if the mounts fail. The CM shouldn't be resting on the channel, but I bet it is! Galvin's has replacements. I hope that's the fix... they aren't hard to replace. |

Follow Frank's advice. If the flex plate was broken the car would not even start.

Then the problem is most likely the rubber mounts on the ends of the trans crossmember, with the cushion on the end of the torque tube the second most likely problem. The center bearing and universal joint hardly ever wears out, but then they are over 50 years old now.
Hmm... there is one more possibility -- a spun hub on the axle. Check the right (passenger side) hub first. Just pop the hub cap and have someone watch the axle nut while you put it in gear. If the nut turns (axle) before the wheel you have a spun hub. The left axle can spin, but most of the time it's the right. If that's the case you need to find a used axle with the hub. You can't just tighten the hub or replace the key. The key adds little (if any) strength to the joint, it's there so that the hub will go back on the way it came off. New hubs are impossible to find. AMC didn't specify a re-torque interval on axle nuts because the cars weren't expected to be on the road 40-50 years later. The axle does stretch ever so slightly over the years, and at around 30 years or more it's enough to relieve some of the holding power of the nut. Drag racers are hard on axles and find this out sooner. A car can have enough power with sticky wide tires to overcome the holding power at any time, but stock and even strong street engines usually won't. Think a mid level, say 300-350 hp 360/401, not something meant to tear up the drag strip even if it is street legal. |

Ive seen cars run with broken flexplates. Does it knock sitting still in gear? If it does........then Id think engine. If it knocks when you move the car, then above...applies.
